Default Beatles recording engineer Geoff Emerick has died

More HERE. I enjoyed his work and his book, Here, There and Everywhere: My Life Recording the Music of The Beatles. Of course I would: I am one of those dodgy recording engineer types.

Wow, only 72 y/o. That’s too bad. He was brilliant. RIP Geoff.

Bob, as a recording engineer, you may have seen the “Deconstructing The Beatles” lecture/film series by professor/director Scott Frieman, where Frieman breaks down the tracks so the viewer can see and hear how the music was produced. He discusses Geoff’s work and innovations quite a bit. I saw the Revolver, Rubber Soul, Sgt. Pepper, and The White Album films four Mondays in a row at a local movie theater.

These films were fascinating, a must see for those really interested in such stuff.

I agree with Bob on Emerick's book. It's excellent. In one book there's a great deal of insight into the technical atmosphere and structure at Abbey Road studios back in the day, and a closely observed perspective on the Beatles as a group. If you've ever wondered what it's be like to be in studio with the Beatles, this is the one book can convince you that "you are there."

I suppose a few readers might be put off on his framing the story with details of how the studio worked. Those readers are missing out. I read a lot of music memoirs and biographies. This is one of the best.

I've always found these sorts of presentations interesting. Thanks!

Good book for those interested in an early history of recording, and of course, those Beattle albums. It was easy reading and not too overly technical.

Tremendous engineer... a friend of my brother's, Tom (T.A. Anderson) worked under Geoff as an assistant engineer and later came to be a great engineer in his own right...

You've gotta love the guy who turned the chicken into a guitar on Sgt. Pepper's!!!

Thanks, Geoff, for all the wonderful music upon which you had such influence...
