D28? Doesn't look like it has herringbone purfling which would make it 1946 or later, the little bit of the sides I can see look like Brazilian Rosewood which would make it pre-1969. That said, assuming the tuners are originals, I would guess the guitar is older than the 1960's, if I remember correctly, Martin went to sealed tuners sometime in the 1960's (I'm not sure about that however).

PS. Looking at it again, I think it does have herringbone purfling which would make it a pre-war D28....or a shockingly beat up Brazilian D28 from more recent times.

Pre-war D28, I would bet.

The combination of dot inlay and herringbone trim was only used from late-1944 until very early in 1947. The 1946 D-28's had larger dots than what I am seeing here, so I think it is a 1945, or late-'44. Tuners are probably modern Waverly, which are much more functional than the original wartime Klusons.

I don't see any herringbone on the top. Not sure but Martin did build some D-21 Brazilians I believe? Not sure of the years they did build them but that could be a possibility? Whatever it is that's the sound I want too!

Looks like the 1946 D-28 that Keith Urban acquired shortly after that devastating year 2010 flood in Nashville, Tennessee.

Quote from Keith Urban: "The oldest guitar I have is a 1946 Martin D-28 acoustic guitar - that's definitely the oldest." From the web page over at 10 Questions with ... Keith Urban.

Here's Keith playing the 1946 Martin D-28 at the 2019 CMA awards show:

I just listened to a video from Norman's Rare guitars of an amazing '44 D-28. In almost pristine condition. No idea what they were asking for it but It was just stellar.
