Why aren’t all guitars cutaways?
Because Martin didn’t think of it first!

About 2 years ago I did a rather long Taylor 314 vs 314ce AB at my local guitar shop in a quiet closed room. With those two particular guitars the difference in tone was significant and obvious (with the non-cutaway being the more desirable of the two). I understand this is a single datapoint but it has imprinted on me. Unfortunately Taylor has drastically reduced their production of non-cutaway guitars since then so it is hard to do this test with other models.
I agree with the other poster that most guitars look fine as cutaways except a dread...no thanks. |

Why aren't all guitars cut-aways?
I have this guitar which doesn’t even have frets above 14!

I like a cutaway for certain things. I have one (Guild D-120ce) and my next guitar will be a cutaway too.
Some guitars just don't look right with them though (the Gibson J-45 being one of them, imo). I play a lot of tunes that are capo'd high and I need all the room I can get. I have a 12 fret 00 that I wish was a cutaway at times.

Based on the responses, it seems that LOOKS tops the list of reasons why many do not like cutaways (or sound ports, or preamps with barn doors, or armrests etc.).
I am in the minority that doesn't care at ALL what the guitar looks like IF it plays and sounds like a dream. Fortunately my audience is that way too

I think a cutaway is just not pleasing to the eye and unless one plays a lot beyond the 12th fret there is no need for this. I play one song that reaches to the 14th fret, and I prefer to play that song on my only 12-fret guitar, and NOT on my only cutaway guitar (just for the fun of it)!

Life is too short to spend it with an ugly guitar.

I'm just a traditionalist. Don't like the looks of cutaways. But then, I also have an irrational dislike of sunburst finishes; I appreciate a really well done one as art, but probably wouldn't buy one.

There's nothing irrational about disliking sunburst finishes.

Thank God they aren't all cutaways. I hate the look.
