Default Headstocks

I like the OLD Breedlove headstock. I don't care for the new one.

I have to admit though, this one is pretty cool!

This is my all time favorite. I also love the functionality of the straight string pulls. And a cedar over EIR GC size 14-fret (with no electronics and no cutaway) is my ultimate dream guitar - I've seen only a few over the years but it's the thing I keep my eyes open for.

The Seagull headstock is not one of my favorites, but it doesn't appall me, either. I've owned several Seagulls, and still own one.

I think that "bright red maple leaf" hangtag might be in Canadian music stores only. I can't recall seeing it on Seagull guitars in American music stores.

Which makes sense, what with everyone in the US so alarmed about "the Canadian menace" and all.

Of course, I could be completely wrong, and those maple leaf hangtags ARE in American music stores, I've just haven't been paying attention...

My all-time favorite guitar headstock has to be from the Lloyd Loar-era Gibson L-5:

1925 Gibson L-5

I've also always liked the so-called "haircut headstocks," nicknamed for the way they imitate the part in a man's hair. The modern Epiphone Masterbilt headstock is taken from a 1930's vintage Epi; here's the original design:

Epiphone Broadway Masterbilt

Here's the more recent iteration, which I actually prefer:

Modern Epiphone Masterbilt

Here's Collings Guitars' interpretation of a haircut headstock:

Collings CJ

Here's their fancier version of the same thing:

Collings SJ Maple

I also like the headstock design of Tacoma guitars, which are no longer in production but which generated all sorts of indignation because of their aesthetics on guitar forums when they were. The spluttering, splenetic rage that Tacoma guitars used to stoke in some people could be really funny and kind of scary at the same time, like: "Dude! Chill out! You don't want to burst any blood vessels in your brain!"

Anyway, here are a couple of examples of the Tacoma headstock:

Tacoma EM-14C

If you look carefully at the proportions of these Tacoma headstocks, though, you can see that in terms of their design there's a clear lineage going all the way back the Lloyd Loar-era Gibson L-5 headstock.

Which I think is pretty cool.

For Martins, their Torch.

For Gisbons, their Vase.

The SA2200 headstock.

While I don't particularly like the 6 string Seagull headstocks, I do like the 12 string one.

National's peaked slothead is appealing.

The D'angelico is also cool, but I'm not too sure about the phallic symbol in the centre.

I love slotted pegheads but I have never owned one. Some day!

Wouldn't it be interesting if guitar makers made patches, like police emblem patches, that matched the head stocks of the guitars they sold.

I generally like the variations of the haircut style.

Here's a different take on the haircut....Gumby style!!!

This is my Santa Cruz 00. I really like not having a logo on a headstock. And greatly prefer a slothead for several reasons.
