Default LOOK INSIDE!! Joel Stehr Small Jumbo Build

Update with new pics on 6/04/2010!!
Just came back from Joe White and Joel is getting ready to string her up. Check the bottom of page 3.

Update with new pics on 4/21/2010!!

Well after being around this great forum for over a year and watching all the different build threads with all those beautiful guitars that you all have had made, I finally get to post a build thread of my own. I'm very excited about this first one of two builds that I'm having done this year. This one is a Joel Stehr Small Jumbo that I actually had a hand in designing with Joel. Joel is a great guy to do a build with and when I told him what it was I was looking for he actually offered to do this particular guitar which is a new design for him. He's currently building one other for someone else so this will be the second build of this particular body style. It will have Myrtle back and sides with a nice white Carpathian top. The sides will be double sides using EIR on the inside. It will be trimmed out with cocobolo and the fretboard is a really unique piece of cocobolo that Joel came up with. It will have a Florentine cutaway and a small bevel as well as a soundport. This will be my first soundport. There a still a few small details to iron out, but that's the big picture. I've lived vicariously though all of your builds over the past year or so and now I'm thrilled to have one of my own. I'm posting some pics here of the Back and sides, the top and the fretboard. I'll also continue to update as Joel makes progress. Tom

That fretboard is a knockout. Who needs inlay when you have wood like that.
Can't wait to follow your build.

Your wood selection is great and I bet your guitar is going to sound as good as it will look.
And since it's a small jumbo, you'll have the best of both worlds: fingerpicking and strumming.
Enjoy the build process with Joel - I certainly did and I'm sure other Stehr owners will concur.

Hi Tom,

Glad to see that your Stehr build is starting (finally). I'm anxiously waiting to see how the SJ turns out, as Joel and I have been talking about building one in Mun Ebony and LS Redwood. Keep those pics coming! Aloha,

Hen

Congratulations on your new guitars. I've only played on one Myrtlewood guitar, a Breedlove, but it had a really sweet and airy tone. I think it's top was Engelmann Spruce. The Carpathian should sound even better, I think.

The last photo in your Photobucket slideshow is spectacular. I love the wood that Joel uses for his fretboards and headstock overlayss

I agree Savashchi, Joel has a wonderful eye for guitar wood combinations. Thank you.

I look forward to seeing this build come together. That will be quite a fretboard!

I'll join the chorus of applause for that fretboard. Wow! That is going to be a stunning guitar with those woods in Joel's hands. I'm anxious to see more :-)

Tom,

great progress. Is this SJ going to be bigger or smaller than Joel's GA?

BTW, how is your Doerr coming along?

Karl

Hi Karl,
This is a new model that will be a touch bigger that the GA. It will have a 16" lower bout and it will also have double sides. This is Joel's first venture into double sides. The idea here is to build a guitar that will be good for both strumming and fingerpicking.
Funny you should ask about the Doerr. It's actually finished and I should be receiving it a week from today. Tom had asked me to hold off on a build thread because he's in the middle of finalizing his new website with all new pics of the 3 models he'll be offering. So we've decided to do a build thread after the fact. I have all the pictures of the build and when his new site is up I'm going to put up a thread on AGF that will depict the build process of my already built Doerr. I can't wait until next week! Thanks for asking. Tom
