I had one builder who made me a BRW guitar sent me a small container of BRW chips. I used these chips to hot smoke a side of salmon in my Big Green Egg (delicious!)...

Default Rims

John has made Honduran Mahogany neck and end blocks and bent the East Indian Rosewood (EIR) rims. The depth of the rims is approximately 3-1/2" deep at the neck block and about 4" deep at the end block.

In the two images below you can see the rough carved EIR back placed on top the rims. The edges of the back plate are still thick so you can see just how well quartered the billet was. The back at the recurve near the rims will eventually be taken down to 0.070"-0.080" with steel scrapers.

Lovely set, Bob. Are you opting for the gold sparkle finish?

Default Rims

John has completed building the tapered (3-1/2" @ the neck block and 4"@ the end block) EIR rims for my Rhapsody. Since the back is carved and without ladder braces or a reinforcement strip it adds some extra depth and volume to the box (similar to a Martin 0000 or M size). John used kerfed Spanish Cedar linings, Sitka Spruce reinforcement strips and Honduran Mahogany end and neck blocks.

Default Rosette n’ Top

It has been a while since I have posted to this build thread, but fear not, the build is moving forward. John chose a beautiful AAA Carpathian Spruce top and inlayed it with Nazarethesque Green Abalone/Maple/Ebony rosette. This top came Romania. He used real cracked shell and not ablam. Once the box is closed, he will add matching Green Abalone top purfling as well. Since the top will be a sunburst, these will need to be be masked.

Following this closely, as I have some thick rosewood I’d been thinking about getting a carved back guitar made with. I’ll be anxious to hear what you think about this vs your Sexauer, and how the carved rosewood affects things - looking really nice!

Tad, I expect them to be somewhat "different beasts" based on both the builders approaches (John and Bruce) and the materials (denser/lower damping vs. lighter/higher damping). As you know, I am delighted with both Bruce's Bigleaf Maple/German Spruce JZ/2 and also John's Honduran Rosewood/Carpathian Cabaret (Nylon) carved back efforts...

Default Top Braced, Back Carved and Rims Complete

John has braced the Carpathian Spruce top. The x-brace, tone bars and UTB are made using Adirondack Spruce, the two finger patches are Carpathian Spruce (same piece as top), the sound hole patch and popsicle brace are both made from Sitka Spruce and the bridge plate is made using skewed Honduran Rosewood.

The beautiful quartersawn East Indian Rosewood carved back and rims are coming along and getting ready for final clean up and sealing. The Honduran Mahogany neck/end blocks, Spanish Cedar kerfed linings and Spruce side reinforcement strips have been installed.

John found a beautiful piece of Sugar Maple for the center section of the 3-piece neck (Honduran Mahogany/Sugar Maple/Honduran Mahogany) that was skewed just off quarter enough to display some birdseye. Here is a shot of the rough cut neck and a close up of some of the birdseye figure.

John has closed the “box” and bound (birdseye sugar maple) and purfled (green abalone) the body. The carved EIR back still needs to be scraped and tuned now that the box is closed. The rosette, purflings and bindings will really “pop” once the autumn burst is applied to the Carpathian Spruce top.

The birdseye sugar maple endgraft and bindings contrast nicely against the EIR sides.
