Default 2011 Hoffman Herringbone Dreadnought: $1950 Shipped

2011 Hoffman Herringbone Dreadnought guitar. I'm selling my tour guitar as I'm not touring and in typical guitar cliché fashion I have another option I'd like to trade out for.

I have this listed on Ebay and Reverb for a Buy it now of $2600. But I'm hoping someone might dig it here. Photo's are posted on both of those sites and I've also included two videos for you to hear the guitar, although they were recorded with my iPhone6.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/122244531156...84.m1555.l2649

https://reverb.com/item/3503249-hoffman-dreadnought

Features:
Adirondack Red Spruce top
East Indian Rosewood Back and sides
Curly Hawaiian Koa Binding and End Wedge
5 piece Laminated Neck: Mahogany, Maple, Wenge
Ebony Fretboard, Headplate, Bridge
Herringbone Rosette, top Purfling, back strip
Gold Waverly Tuners with Ebony Buttons
K&K Pure Mini Pickup installed
Bone nut, saddle, and bridge pins
Traditional Strap button on the heel.

Measurements:
25.34" Scale Length
1 11/16" nut 2 5/16" String Spacing
5" Depth at the Tail Block
3 15/16" Depth at the Neck Block
19 7/8" Body Length
11 3/8" Upper Bout
10 5/8" Waist
15.5" Lower Bout

Current Action:
Set for Bluegrass/ Fingerstyle Playing

At the 14th Fret: 1/8" Bass, 5/64" Treble
.009" Relief in the Neck at the 8th fret
Nut Action at the first fret: .026"Bass, .0195" Treble.
Saddle Height Reveal: 1/8" Bass, 3/32" Treble.

Overall the guitar is in great condition. There was a professional top seam repair done but all is well and stable now. The fretboard has lacquer bursts at the fret ends, what looks like chips in the finish, which is typical of nitro over exposed fret ends.

This guitar is voiced a little lower then one might want a traditional bluegrass guitar to be if your thinking of vintage 30's and 40's Martin door buster tone, but it sounds great and warm nonetheless, more like a 28 then an HD28. There was also a bump on the Lower Bout that happened in Europe on the back side that you can see in the photos as well. All of the cracks are just in the finish and they are not structural.

Fun Fact: This instrument has been played by Justin Vernon of Bon Iver and Chris Eldridge of Punch Brothers in hotel and theater (green) rooms/ stairwells. Nothing significant happened other than some guys playing a guitar but it does add some proper Indie and Bluegrass cred to the instrument. Maybe?

Charlie Hoffman has one of the longest free standing guitar repair shops in the United States, since 1971, and has built over 600 instruments by hand. His guitars start at $4600.00. This Hoffman comes with a late 90's Martin Dreadnought SKB style case.

Any questions please ask.

Thanks for looking.
Cheers.

Not sure if it is possible to have 1 11/16 nut width with that wide of a 2 5/16 string spacing.

It's totally possible, it's a hot rod. Charlie hand carves everything and any builder can build anything they want. Charlie is a great builder. He has lots of tricks. I measured it all with a caliper. And while it's not an 1 3/4" nut, it (the neck and over all fretboard feel) feels like it. The 1 11/16" isn't that noticeable in the traditional narrow neck feel as it has a wider string spacing.

And you can see it. The wider saddle spacing, I mean. On the videos.

My name is Todd Lunneborg. I write for the Fretboard Journal. I've been Building and Repairing instruments for 25 years and I got asked about the seam repair in a private message and I thought it would be appropriate to post my response here as well.

Here's the message exchange:

"Hey! Nice looking/sounding dread. Wondering how the top seam repair was done; cleats involved?
Thanks and glwts"

Hey...

It was humidified for a week. The split never showed on the inside. Mainly it was just in the finish. Then it was reglued and strapped. Cleaned up and 3 thin cleates, 1/2" x 1/2" x .043" then the braces adjusted to account for the cleat/glue weight. Charlie has brace coverage every 2", there is a 3rd tone bar, so there wasn't a lot of need for them but I installed them anyway. Top pitch is the same post cleats as it was when I started.

Here's the nut:

And the Saddle Spacing:

It really does play more like an 1 3/4" nut.

I was asked in an email what the nut spacing was.

String spacing at the nut is 1 7/16" Center to Center.

Just a note. I run a shop and I am able to take all Major CC''s for payment. I don't want to step on any toes or break any forum rules but as this is not one of my builds I'm selling (it's my personal guitar) and I have a shop where I am able to make the monetary part easy, I just thought I'd mention it in case it might help this guy find a new home.

Thanks for all the looks guys. I wish he didn't have the top issue as well. But it has been stable and fine since I did the repair.

If you need more audio samples I'll do my best to provide anything you might need. Requests taken- to a point. I'm not a good lead player and I've never tried to play Polkas, so...
