McPherson Guitars?
Does anybody own one of these? They seem to be pretty expensive, and from what I've heard make my Gibsons sound like Epiphones. Anyone have any experience? Im not looking to buy just merely curious to see if they're worth the high price tags I've seen. Thanks!

McPherson
They're nice guitars but there are nicer out there for less.
I've played a few and they sound good but I'd put a Goodall, Webber or any number of other guitars up against them. It's like everything else with this obsession we share. It's what it's worth to you. |

I've played a few ... some were great, some not so much, most in the middle. Not my favorite, but there certainly are many whose favorite it is.

Just the thought of giving up my Gibsons makes me a little sad on the inside. It will never happen...

McPherson
There was an old one on CL here recently. Late '70's, Lam B/S MIJ. It was when the current owner's father was dabbling with guitar building. It had a hole on either side of the top near the edges of the upper bout and a hole on the top just above the end block.
Interesting design to be sure. |

Oh, and the lack of a truss rod is sort of worrying to me.

This is copied from my post in the previous thread a few months ago:
They are very nice guitars and I'm honored to have two of them. A 3.5 Ziricote/Redwood and a 4.5 Cocobolo/Engelmann. Both sound incredible, are beautiful and I play them often. The main thing that impresses me is the amount of sustain they have. I've heard them described as "piano like" which seems to me to be a pretty accurate description. The only other guitar that I've ever had with the same (or possibly a bit more) sustain is my Kwasnycia. One thing about the McPhersons is that they are built very heavy. I've never weighed them, but I'll bet my 4.5 is at least twice the weight of my Kwaz. Are they worth the money, that's a personal decision for each one to make on their own. Cheers, Mark |

I've spent a fair amount of time at SoundPure in Durham, NC ... a McPherson dealer.
They also carry Bourgeois, Collings, Santa Cruz, and they stock a number of other boutique makes such as Lowden, Olson, Goodall, etc. I have to say that if I had the disposable income to afford a McPherson, I would probably spend it on one of the other more traditionally built acoustics. I don't have that kind of money to invest in a guitar so it's kind of moot, but if I did ...

I've never played a bad McPherson and I can't say that about Gibsons, Martins or Taylors, or any number of other brands.
For the price they charge, that should be the standard.

Nice guitars, but overpriced. I've played three and none were something I had to have. To me, any guitar over around 3500 is probably overpriced. They're voiced to more of a modern, new age tone to my ears. Of course, there are others who love them. Depends on what you like.
