Default Lets have another string discussion :)

So I finally purchased myself a fancy used Epiphone EJ200ce acoustic. And now I'm looking for that one magical type of string that sounds the best with this guitar. For anyone who isn't familiar with this. It is a jumbo body Gibson J-200 type monstrosity, with a solid spruce top, laminate maple back and sides, rounded cutaway, and electronics. So my main question is this: Is there a type of string that owners of this guitar have found to make it sound the best? I'm not looking for gibson quality tone, mind you. I'm just looking to make MY guitar as good as it can be. Thanks guys!

Nice guitar good choice. Really comes into its own when plugged in IMHO.

"As good as it can be". You say.

Good to play? Good to listen to? Good to play acoustically? Good to play amplified? Good to play in a band? Good to play solo? Good to play strumming? Good to play picking? Good to play whilst singing?

See where I'm going on this?

Try a few different strings and see how you feel about them.

Good luck.

What strings does Gibson recommend for the SJ-200?
I looked it up, specs are .012"-.053" Gibson Light Guage.
There's your starting point.

I'm running Martin SP PBs on mine. I strung up one of my customer's J-200 with the same strings and it sounded fantastic.

I see your point haha. I mostly play solo, acoustically. I tend to fingerpick mostly. I only bought an acoustic electric for the motivation to start moving towards playing live again.

I had an EJ-200 once that I put a Fishman Matrix Infinity pick-up in, and I used John Pearse 600L's (phosphor bronze lights). I thought it sounded really good with those strings.

Congratulations, cool guitar!

I think Martin Retros in gauge 12 would be an interesting choice. I'd try those first. If they seem too bright out of the gate give them some play time before switching them out.

I'd also think any of the better phosphor bronze sets would sound good. I've had good luck with Martin, GHS, SIT 'Royal Bronze' and Peavey Mississippi Mellows (hard to find, but very nice).

Good luck.

RotoSound phosphor bronze or Nanoweb phosphor bronze.
