What kind of finish do I like on a fine guitar?

Yes, thank you!

I do like bursts (I have a folder on my hard drive full of images of great sunbursts on old Gibsons) but for some reason I generally don't like them on larger bodied guitars. My J45 has a natural finish and I love it, but if I was looking for an LG-2 then I'd probably go for one with a burst.

We need more avocado green bursts and two-tone sky blue and purple bursts. They have to think outside the box.

Totally. When I wanted a darker guitar, I bought a natural cedar top. That was dark enough.

I want to see the wood when I hear the wood.

Your Kopp is one of the nicest looking 'AJs' I've seen.

As others have said the “house paint” solid blue or red don’t appeal to me, black is ok. I do love a good sunburst and I think Gibson real excel in that area.

I like a burst but all my current guitars are natural. I haven’t had a burst since I sold my AJ about a year ago. Kevin Kopp makes beautiful bursts and decided he would rectify my dearth of burstness. I’ve got one more year to wait…and a nice flamed mahogany back & sides set picked. It’s going to get a pretty honey/amber burst finish…

While your pondering bursts…and Kevin Kopp’s bursts have been mentioned…it seems we haven’t heard much about your new Kopp. It’s a burst IIRC. How are you two getting along?

BTW…hope you are feeling better these days…

While I prefer the natural wood look, I don’t mind a burst but I am picky about them. I like the amber tone and honey bursts better than the really dark ones. Cherry bursts can be gorgeous when well done. The only guitar with a burst that I currently own is an all mahogany shadow burst by Alvarez. It is an elegant looking guitar with the micro strip abalone purfling. I also think that the Americana music movement has played a role in the increase in the darker, vintage look.
Best,
Jayne

Hi Wade…
I'm in neither camp.

What I do appreciate about Sweetwater is they have a photo department which photos EACH guitar in stock from several angles and weigh them and post everything about the individual guitars.

They are very 'smart' and stock what sells (which means they track what is popular).

They truly are doing everything possible to serve the non-traveling community.

Gibson and burst just go together, IMHO. Sweetwater is so sophisticated, they have their finger on the marketplace and a ton of sales history in their own records. I was very disappointed that the first J 45 vintage I played had a plain sunburst because of the cooked top. They can't do the traditional bust on a cooked top because of the dye not taking to the wood.

If you look, thinks of how few J 50s were sold compared to J 45s. To me Martin has only shined with the iced tea burst. Historically, they've sucked, IMHO.

I like the classic Gibson sunbursts, ranging from the original small ones through the banner era.

And I like the Martin Ambertones.

All others are on a case by case basis.

Whether I want a sunburst or natural finish depends on the guitar. Some I do, some I don't.

Was never a big fan of burst finishes. Now I have two of them and the third is a natural but blackwood so dark. Go figure. I'm still not a huge fan of the very dark burst finishes (like both of mine) but I do like the 'softer' bursts like Martin's Ambertone which I find stunning. I also really like the Santa Cruz edge burst finishes on their 1929 all-mahogany guitars.
