Accuracy of Clip-On vs. Tuner Apps
Hi folks,
Just wondering your views on the accuracy of a clip-on tuner (Snark for example) vs. guitar tuner apps on my iphone? Thanks! |

Most clip on tuners seem pretty accurate (even a $10 Snark). I don't use tuner apps as they require a microphone which is problematic in noisier situations (and bad for your privacy).

Pretty much everything today is accurate. The question is how user friendly and appropriate to task it is.
Your iPhone app would be pretty useless during a live set on stage. But for sitting down playing at home it may be fine. The Unitune clip-on is very popular here. It has a fast reaction time and a bright display. But it lacks any cent readings, so you could say it is not "accurate" if you want to stray from ET. But it is very "fit for purpose".

On my phone (S20) some strings are up to 5 percent off when comparing the peterson app and their clip on tuner. Same thing with other apps. I guess it depends on the accuracy of the microphone of your phone.

I avoided clip on tuners for a long time, but broke down a year or so ago and got a TC polytune clip on - it's fantastic and I should have done it awhile before. The app on my phone is pretty accurate as well, but I prefer the clip on honestly, works when noise is around, easily moves between guitars etc.

Most of the clip-on tuners I'm seen aren't precise enough to be able to know how accurate they are. By which I mean, they could be off by one or two cents but still show the green light or whatever to indicate "in tune".

The phone mic picks up too much ambient noise. Clip on not perfect, but better than that.

I'm not sure the question is accuracy. I suspect most tuners/apps are more accurate than most ears. But in many situations I personally find the clip on tuner a much better choice.

i have a few snarks, d'addarios and washburn tuners, preference is the snarks i have, as far as reading them. clip ons are most convenient especially on my 12s as i need to fine tune every 20 minutes or so, lol.
but in case we get hit by an emp or something alien that wipes out all electronic/battery devices, i always have my a440 fork

Nowadays, they are all pretty darn good. I use TC Polytunes, and find them fast and easy. If you want, they also can be set to display strobe-type display like the Peterson. I also have a peterson clip tuner, but find it hyper sensitive and too jumpy to be used easily or quickly.

The app I have kind of sucks, doesn't pick up well, it was free, gets me by in a pinch. I much prefer my clip on TC Unitune, I've had a few other brands, no question the Unitune is my favourite, love it.

I think some of it depends on the level of app or tuner as well. I have one app that I paid a whole $5 for I believe a lifetime subscription and I use it to tune intonation.
Still won't work in a noisy area though. I have clip ons that are great. I have cheaper clip ons that are often out a few cents according to my better tuners. the built in tuner in my axe FX is probably my gold standard. |

I've been a die hard Peterson user nearly 50 years.
Have used all options. From 450, 520, 490 rack unit. Strobostomp classic, Strobostomp HD, Stroboclip, Stroboclip HD. I hear good things about the Polytune. I heard good things about the Snark. Then I tried one. I'll stick with my Peterson's. I have tried a couple of the free apps on my phone. Not too impressed. Last edited by EZYPIKINS; 10-21-2021 at 08:06 AM. |

In a quiet environment, I have found my iPhone tuner app to be just as good as my clip-on tuners. Another vote here for the Uni-tune.
Have you ever noticed what the pros use when they are performing on stage? Most that I've seen use clip on tuners. If its good enough for them, its good enough for me. I don't need to have the +/- 1 cent accuracy. Last edited by lfoo6952; 10-20-2021 at 10:56 PM. |

Accuracy of Clip-On vs. Tuner Apps
For me, there is a sweet spot for a tuner’s accuracy. That is, an extremely accurate tuner is too picky and hard to use for most playing, and a clip on tuner such as a snark is about right.
For intonation adjustments and critical recording, a strobe or other high accuracy tuner may be worth the extra time and tuning. For changing strings, tuning up for practice, and just plain playing, a quick and forgiving tuner is right for me.
