Are these specs possible?
I saw an ad for a guitar that said it had a 1 11/16 width the nut and a 2 1/4 string spacing out the saddle. I’ve never ever seen a guitar with those specifications. Is that possible?

Definitely possible.

But possibly incorrect.

I played a guitar with those specs but it was a custom for someone. Not sure about models that come off the rack with those specs.

The Collings CW dreads have 1 23/32 nut with 2 1/4" spacing as standard spec, so not that far off from 1 11/16 either.

My '34 Gibson L-4 has a 1 & 3/4" nut width but a 2 & 1/4" string spacing. plenty of archtops had 1 & 11/16" nut widths - that was why it was developed - for tenor banjo players transitioning from New Orleans to swing.

I would have to double check, but I'm pretty sure those are the specs on my Guild D-46 and also on the D-50 that I just sold.

Good to know. I just didn’t think that would be physically possible with such a narrow nut width. The neck must go from super narrow to really wide.

I saw an instrument listed a while back with 1 11/16 nut and 2 3/8 saddle.
Sounded good at the time, apparently!

That would be quite unusual but is perfectly possible. An 11/16” nut is usually paired with a 2-⅛” string spacing at the nut and about 2-¼” fingerboard width at the bridge end of the fingerboard extension.

String specs
It’s actually quite normal. I have a Collings D1T that has that. A 1 3/4” nut paired with a 2 5/16” bridge spacing is actually a bigger difference than what is being discussed here.

I once saw a video by Folkway Music showing three vintage J-35, and at least one of them had a 1-5/8 nut with 2-3/8 at the saddle. |

But I’ve seen plenty with those specs. Just about every other bourgeois has those. Not many off the rack with one and 11/16 and 2 1/4.

Why would that be considered impossible? You can have almost any nut and saddle combination from classical with a 2 1/8” nut and 2 1/4” at the saddle to the 1 5/8” x 2 3/8” mentioned above. It’s not common, but it’s preference. I have a Franklin the is 1 11/16” x 2 3/8”. It makes finger-picking easy at the saddle but the neck is classic full C like a 40’s Martin.
