David Wilcox and his Olson 1996 SJ
I just ran across a video of David Wilcox playing his Olson SJ at acoustic guitar magazine.com. He shares the story of how the guitar came to be. It is really a beautiful sounding guitar. This would be my dream guitar. I think I'm going to buy a lottery ticket tonight. Hey, you cant win if you don't play.

I remember watching this video some time ago. And I had the same impression then that I do now. That is, I would love to have an Olson with an Adirondack spruce top like that!
I own a 1995 Olson SJ with a western red cedar top. It's very nice and rather mellow sounding. I bought it used, so it was reasonably affordable for an Olson. And there is no question that I feel very fortunate to have this guitar. But I would really also love to have an Olson SJ with an Adirondack top like the one David Wilcox is playing. That would really be something! Sometimes a person wants mellow, and sometimes a person wants something a little more immediate sounding. - Glenn

So thankful that's what I have in my two steel strings - Charis is warm and smooth and the Mcknight/Poling is a little more "in your face". They compliment each other well.

Playing Technique
I'm curious about the capo. Is it a partial? Several of his finger positions involve frets just above the capo. Whats going on there?

David plays with multiple cut capos and in every tuning you could possibly imagine. First time I saw him play was in about '89 when he stood next to me leaning up against a record bin and played a few songs (I was the only one that showed for his in-store appearance) Saw him a couple dozen times over the years, sang with him and he used my PA for a house concert. He's an other-worldly talent.

What I love about this video is David’s James Olson impression. If you have spent time with Jim, that is exactly the way he talks.

Would like to hear it in standard tuning without a capo.

Hi Dryfly
I've followed David's playing since 2005, and I'm not sure he plays in standard, though I have seen him without capos. He also still owns at least one Olson…as of 6 months ago (April 2021) on a blog cast he was playing it. One night I was at a concert, and I lost track of his tuning after the 11th time he retuned during the show. It wasn't the last time he retuned, just the last place I was able to track what he tuned to. I own an Olson and have played over 30 of them, and they are all winners in standard and 'other' tunings. Their rich tone is not from the tunings we play in.

Love the piece and his playing. Does anyone know what the tuning is for this.
