Needed in order to play music Just one, really. Willie solidly proves you only need one. Monte Montgomery has made pretty good use of just one. It sure is nice to enjoy the luxury of choosing from a variety of guitars though!!

I'd agree completely. It's an important part of who I am, my identity, and I really think it's healthy to have things that are "for you," for your personal health and well being. I treat guitar playing like some folks treat yoga, I suppose.

As others have said...One guitar.
That said, I have 6. I didn't start out to have six or even 2. It does occur to me that a case can be made for having just one. You certainly could and probably would, really bond with the one instrument. You would develop a feel for it. You would know exactly what to do to get all that you want out of it. There would be no re-adjusting like there is with multiples. I will bet Willie Nelson doesn't even think about Trigger. He he just does whst he does. |

I have zero interest or inclination personally to own a big stable of guitars...too much work...too many possessions. However, I am very often thinking about my next one...if, and when, and what. My current one isn't worth a thing but I love it and would almost feel I was cheating on it to get another. At the same time, I am always GASsing for another steel 6 string for alternate tuning and/or slide...a nylon string...a 12 string...a resonator... However many guitars a person wants is up to them, but I can definitely see why so many players like more than one. If you play out, it's always good to have a backup. If you use alternate tunings, it's nice to have a dedicated guitar for each. If your #1 needs to go into the shop, it's nice to have a #2 (or even a #s 3-through7!)

I guess it depends on how "need" is defined. For me, I define it in the context of my music endeavors and nothing more, or less.
Currently, I "need" five or six guitars: 1 Martinesque rosewood/spruce OM. 1 Martinesque mahogany/spruce OM. 1 or 2 new agey/modern build medium sized (between 00 and mini-jumbo). 1 quality classical guitar. 1 all hog or all koa mid sized guitar That's five or six. I have seven now. |

My wife suggested one for each day of the week and I agreed.
So I have 10.

There are subtle differences between a player, a collector and a hoarder. One can be one or a combination of all three i suppose but I am the first kind. I play them. Each adds it's own distinct sound to whatever I am singing so they will not collect dust waiting to be auctioned off when I pass away. But back to the question.
Let's see now. I have a classical, an "I'll take it anywhere" dreadnaught, a hollow body electric, a large 6 string and a 12 string. Then there are a bunch of others instruments all over, but that's for another question. |

I have 8 as of today, with the latest coming in this afternoon. 2 will be moving on in the next month - one as a gift the other being sold. That leaves me with 6; 2 that hang on my office wall to create balance (both are played daily, if for just a few minutes) and 4 at home. Of the 4 at home, I keep one in DADFAD and the others in standard and alternate through the week amongst all. If there was one I didn't play weekly I think it would need to move on. So 6 is the number and the number is 6.
How many do I need? However many create net happiness. I suppose if my "habit" caused any financial stress, that would be of concern but since they don't, as Brucebubs keyed in on, I may just need to add days to the week
