'Cincinnati Supernova' is a guitar-centric novel based in the 70's. Check out some of the reviews.

Great adventures with a much deeper world perspective than one might expect, this is not a Grace Slick/Airplane/Starship story. Super articulate, very well written (audio)book. Plenty about playing, technique and equipment. Halfway through this one and really enjoying it.
Note: Can't listen to this without an earworm of Water Song looping non-stop in my head.

My "background book" that I am reading at bedtime is a re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-read if Richard O'Kane's Clear the Bridge!: The War Patrols of the U.S.S. Tang. It is considered the best monograph on U.S. submarine operations in the Pacific, coming from the highest-scoring sub captain and submarine of the war. Besides that, it is a whale of a read, with suspense and action right up to the unexpected close. Highly recommended. In fact, after this, only one other submarine monograph, Eugene Fluckey's Thunder Below!: The USS Barb Revolutionizes Submarine Warfare in World War II, comes close. USS Tang, SS306, was a hot ship, and it showed in the speed of her patrols and her results.

What Are You Reading? (continuation...)

Just finished a re-read of 1962 book "Seven Days In May" by Knebel and Bailey. Yes, I read it back then but in paperback, so it was at least a year later when I read it, probably as a high school sophomore. I still read a lot of books.

It's about a military based coup in the U.S., and it is even scarier now than it was then. Very well written and somehow recently topical. Highly recommend reading it.

And the movie it spawned some years later is exceptionally good.

Don

Fantastic! Cincinnati Supernova is getting some good reviews. If you were a teen in the 70's it might speak to you. Especially if you played in a band.

I'm enjoying the audiobook of Saturn Run by John Sandford and Ctein. Sandford came highly recommended but I'm hesitant to dive into a series (at least until I know I like an author), so I chose this one as a stand-alone novel. Really good so far about a third of the way through it.

This isn't a spoiler because it's not central to the plot, but it raises a question in my mind. Set in the year 2065, one character entertains himself (and other musicians) by making guitars on a 3D printer. Is there such a thing? Or is that just sci-fi future-tech at this point?

I've never read anything by Ken Follett, but have heard for years that this one is his best.

I finally ran across a copy at our used book store.

At 972 pages it will keep me busy for a long while. I'm enjoying it very much so far.

I read this last year. Took me a while to get into it, but once I did, I couldn't put it down.

If you like this, check out Edward Rutherfurd's work - similar sprawling historically-based sagas. Sarum and Russka are two of my favourites of his.

Will do, David, thanks for the recommendations.

And I think I hit the "can't put it down" point this morning.

Just finished Crossroads, by Jonathan Franzen. It’s my first book by this author and I don’t think it will be my last. Rich, complex characters. His ability to write from the point of view of someone struggling with psychosis is impressive. As a therapist who has worked with many individuals with psychosis, I’ve witnessed this thought process first hand. He did an excellent job of really getting into the head of someone who is psychotic. I also loved his exploration of each character’s journey of psychological and spiritual growth.

The survey,” she writes, “revealed that 90 percent of the visitors had no idea that a shell is made by a living animal. Most people thought they were stones.”

Oh my. This is truly alarming.
