Default Gotta get rid of a fridge

I have a 20 year old fridge at a vacant rental property that I need to dispose of before new tenant moves in. Got some good use out of it, in good condition, but I don’t want to be responsible for it any more. What’s the best way to go about hauling it away? I dont move furniture nor do I know anyone near there to ask. Call a mover? Junk guy?

If it runs, put it on Craigslist, list it for free and say "Buyer must haul it. If it's not gone in a week, it's going to the dump."

Also, some organizations like Goodwill might actually pick it up. You can even write it off on your taxes if you do this. Goodwill has a form for this.

Good luck!

We had a refrigerator in our basement we wanted to get rid of a couple years ago. We called the electric utility and they sent a company out to pick it up and haul it away at no cost and gave us a $50 rebate. This was in the Denver area but your electric company may have a similar program.

We donated ours to Habitat for Humanity. They came and hauled it away and were thrilled to get it.

In my area anything made of metal can be left at the corner with a 'free' sign and will be gone in less than 24 hours - the 'metal scrappers' take literally anything.
I put my 22-year-old fridge out there in August (had to take the doors off it to get it through the doorways, and a neighbor came and asked about it 10 minutes later to use in his rec room.

i got a $50 rebate from my electric company. they had someone come out to pick it up. i figured they wanted the metal but they told me they just wanted the freon. that old freon is very expensive. i know because i had an AC guy come out to fix mine with a new capacitor and he topped off the freon. $150/lb. woah!

play music!

Interesting, I dumped an old fridge over the summer at the local transfer station and they charged me a $30 service fee to drain the old freon. Looks like they are making money on both ends.

If you're replacing the refrigerator with a new one, the company selling you the new one usually will take away the old one.

Yeah, if your city will let you get away with it you can just put it at the curb and someone will pick it up in no time.

Out here the metal recycle/scrap will pick it up for free.
They advertise on craigslist.

Thanks all. I’m not looking to replace it hopefully. It’s in decent condition and runs fine but it’s old and if it breaks down on a new tenant I don’t want the responsibility any more. I’d like to get it out of there sooner than later.

Soon, we’ll be replacing the appliances in a new existing home we bought. They’re in great shape, we just prefer a different style. We’d like to give it all away to a family in need. Not entirely sure how to go about it, but if we can’t find a family ourselves, Habitat for Humanity is an organization we’ll be considering.
