Hi Mike. is there any chance of finding out what that third mystery ingredient is in the magic old juice?
I have built a couple violins years ago and wouldn't mind trying that stuff on a new one. Hanging an instrument in full sun or in a UV cabinet is another way to get some tan color into the wood. Last edited by mikeC123; 06-27-2013 at 07:09 AM.

Hi Mike, thanks for that lnk. I know of Michael Darnton from a violin forum, and forgot that I had read that PDF back some time ago. Violin makers have also been known to use a dilute solution of potassium nitrate or nitrite to darken the wood. If your third mystery ingredient is nitric acid I would shy away from that as an acid will tend to degrade the wood in time.

While I've waiting for the french polish to dry it's time to get started on the bridge. Of course I had to keep on with the same theme so here's what I came up with!
First I drilled a 1/2" hole in a previously started bridge blank...  Then some work with chisels and knives...  A little bit more...  Now I had to make the pieces to fit in; these took a bit of time...  The real trick was the order to glue everything up. I wanted to make sure I had a solid border of maple strips around the outside with Indian Rosewood on the inside...  Getting closer...  And here is where I left it yesterday...  Today I'll clear out the 1/2" hole, put in a spalted maple circle bordered by Indian Rosewood and Maple strips and hopefully finish carving! Mike

Got the bridge nearly finished yesterday. The trickiest part was trying to fit in the outer maple strips in the circle section...
 Now with the spalted maple inlayed...  And roughtly carved...  Besides the truss rod cover, that's the last bit of designing I have to do for this guitar. Now the big excitement will be in a week or two when I can finally put some strings on it! Mike
