Mike, I'm a sucker for a nice, cleverly designed logo that works. Yours is top notch.

Wow, thanks Stu! Luckily for any potential buyers this guitar will be valued slightly less than the Mona Lisa and hopefully will be played and and not spend it's life behind glass!

Thanks Kyle. At first I was going to go with the incredibly original name, Kennedy Guitars, but since it was already taken I had to come up with a new idea. I grew up on Indian Hill Road and when I realized that a capital 'I' and 'H" are essentially the same thing the logo basically made itself!

Mostly just french polishing these past few days. I decided to darken the binding slightly, but not as much as the back and sides. I think it makes the transitions a bit visually smoother...

Really beautiful work, Mike--I'm looking forward to seeing this one at Healdsburg!

Hi Mike. is there any chance of finding out what that third mystery ingredient is in the magic old juice?

I have built a couple violins years ago and wouldn't mind trying that stuff on a new one. Hanging an instrument in full sun or in a UV cabinet is another way to get some tan color into the wood.

Hi Mike, I'm not sure of the exact recipe (and Jeremy is still out of town), but it seems like this guy has the same basic idea (page 17)...http://houslari.sweb.cz/varnish.pdf

The french polishing is coming right along and I'll probably leave it as it is for the next week...

Once I have a relatively even and and flat covering of shellac I like to give it some time to really dry and settle. After a week I'll come back and lightly sand it flat again (as it will inevitably settle lower in pores, etc.) and give it one or two more light sessions.

I think the color of the aged maple has really turned out quite well! I've been a bit back and forth the past week but think I'm finally happy with the idea of leaving the center section un-aged...

Hi Mike, thanks for that lnk. I know of Michael Darnton from a violin forum, and forgot that I had read that PDF back some time ago. Violin makers have also been known to use a dilute solution of potassium nitrate or nitrite to darken the wood. If your third mystery ingredient is nitric acid I would shy away from that as an acid will tend to degrade the wood in time.

Awesome looking guitar by the way!

Mike, the inlay design also roughly approximates an I over an H

Good eye Kyle! When I was first coming up with a design for the back I thought I'd try to have something in the same ballpark as my logo. Having two overlayed elements, one vertically oriented the other horizontal, was as close as I could get (it's a big ballpark).

I thought it was just a happy coincidence. All the better that it was intentional! Nicely done!

While I've waiting for the french polish to dry it's time to get started on the bridge. Of course I had to keep on with the same theme so here's what I came up with!

First I drilled a 1/2" hole in a previously started bridge blank...

Then some work with chisels and knives...

A little bit more...

Now I had to make the pieces to fit in; these took a bit of time...

The real trick was the order to glue everything up. I wanted to make sure I had a solid border of maple strips around the outside with Indian Rosewood on the inside...

Getting closer...

And here is where I left it yesterday...

Today I'll clear out the 1/2" hole, put in a spalted maple circle bordered by Indian Rosewood and Maple strips and hopefully finish carving!

Got the bridge nearly finished yesterday. The trickiest part was trying to fit in the outer maple strips in the circle section...

Now with the spalted maple inlayed...

And roughtly carved...

Besides the truss rod cover, that's the last bit of designing I have to do for this guitar. Now the big excitement will be in a week or two when I can finally put some strings on it!

Just got back into town after an incredible 5 days at the Grey Fox Bluegrass festival and was excited to see an interview I did with the Fretboard Journal about this guitar up on their site....

I have really enjoyed this thread Michael. That is really one of the most beautiful guitars I have seen in a long time. Congratulations.
