I got to play the guitar after Mike strung it up yesterday (perks of sharing a shop- one of many!) ... and it's magic. It's SO responsive and the overtones are incredibly lush, even after only being strung up for a couple hours. I can't even imagine how good this one will sound years down the road, well worn in.

I've been a bit delinquent in posting about this guitar but with Healdsburg right around the corner it's time to finally finish it up! As Nic mentioned, it was briefly strung up the other day and I'm pretty excited with the sound. More and more I'm convinced that elevated necks are the way to go -- they add a certain quality to the tone that seems consistent across shapes and tone woods. It adds a kind of a roundness or wholeness to the tone. Think of a wooden bell or marimba bar versus something metal. The wood has both clarity and warmth while the metal just cuts. It also has to be one of the loudest guitars I've made to date!
If timing works out I'm hoping to get my friend Mike O'Brien in the shop this weekend to record a demo on it so those of you not going to Healdsburg will get a chance to hear it! In the meantime, I finished up the magnetic truss rod cover yesterday... All that's really left is to finish up the nut, buff, put on the pick guard and get on a plane to California! Mike |

My friend Mike O'Brien came by the shop yesterday and recorded a couple of videos on the (now finished!) guitar. I'll try to post final pictures either today or tomorrow but in the meantime here's Mike's take on Tom Waits' "Chocolate Jesus"...

That is one of the most appealing looking guitars I have ever seen Mike but I am a bit biased towards the look of a well figured blonde guitar. What you say about the elevated neck is interesting.

Thanks so much everyone! As far as aesthetics, this guitar has definitely been one of the bigger challenges I've taken on. I'm about to hop on a train down to New York where I'll be for a few days before flying out to California. Really looking forward to meeting/seeing a bunch of you out there!
Here's the second video I recorded this weekend -- Mike arranged Willie "The Lion" Smith's instrumental piano piece, 'Echoes of Spring'... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zdiDoTtPLxY Bye for now, Mike |
