I think its good that old threads are brought up again for new members and for those of us whose memory is not so good any more.

Default Strings

I have found Martin FX strings very bright initially and after a few days they settle in to a tone similar to most other phosphor bronze. If you play a lot I change them every 2-4 weeks.
I would suggest a bone nut and saddle as the first priority if you have not done that. It will make a bigger difference.

GHS Signature Bronze LJ (formerly Laurence Juber) series. Very bright, but sweet, not harsh sounding. Perfect for adding clarity to a darker rosewood guitar.

These are my string of choice when I am looking for a brighter tone.

Best,

I've got Martin Retros on my Recording King. Pretty darn bright. (I mean the sound , not the shiny monel.)

Having one of my periodic 'recommendations for bright strings' searches so figured I'd revive this thread.

I also have a Recording King ROS-06, which I find really needs bright strings or the bottom E and A just sound dead. I recently put brass bridge pins on it and tried a set of Earthtones Phosphor Bronze 12-54 gauge.

It sounds great, a real transformation. I've only had the strings on about 5 days but I'm enjoying playing this guitar more than ever before, hearing a lot of overtones that just weren't there previously, and it's a lot easier to play harmonics.

I bought a different Recording King secondhand recently, the RNJ26NA, and the previous owner had put Martin Retros. I liked them: they didn't strike me as all that bright, a mellow kind of brightness if that makes sense. Then again, I don't know how long the previous owner had them on...

I wouldn't say dead, but certainly dull, and for me they don't last any longer than uncoated, but, as said, such things are personal

Monels are pretty much like all new strings out of the package in that they seem bright. They may even be a bit more so at first. I find that they mellow pretty quickly and are warmer and drier sounding than PB’s.
