Help with my Yamaha FG 165 S1...
I have an older Yamaha FG 165 (made in Tiawan) and I'm hoping some of the experts here can help me out. I got it earlier this year as part of a mixed lot of musical equipment I bought off my local CL (Pa system, xylophone, etc.). It was missing several strings so I cleaned it up, strung it up with lights and it sounds great. The whole thing vibrates when you play it and it's LOUD, so I'd like to keep it.
The problem is I can't straighten the neck. It's bowed up, but even so it's playable because the previous owner lowered the saddle quite a bit. I'd like to be able to straighten the neck and set it up properly with a little more saddle height. The truss rod adjustment is at the headstock and I tried adjusting it with a flathead screwdriver but there's only so far I can get it to go. I also tried loosening the truss rod, bending the neck back by hand and then re-tightening it and I got it straight that way, but when I tuned it to pitch the neck bowed up again. Before someone asks, no, it doesn't need a neck reset. A straight edge laid on the fretboard just touches the top of the bridge. I'm wondering if the truss rod is broken or if it's just stubborn on these older guitars? Any advice appreciated!!!

Sounds to me like the truss rod isn't doing what it is supposed to do. Confirm with a technician. If it is as I suspect a replacement would be prohibitively expensive and would cost way more than the guitar is worth.

Take it to a tech. My guy has seem many stubborn truss rods that have been "inactive" for long periods that need some persuasion to get moving and back in action. Hopefully that's all it is...good luck!

It may be that the adjuster nut has run out of thread - I'd be inclined to try & unscrew the nut completely, fit some kind of spacer/washer, lubricate the thread ( sparingly! ), & give it another go - if that fails, then the luthier option is probably best.

I appreciate the advice! I'll check that out when I get the chance. There are no "techs" or "luthiers" around here I trust. Been there, done that, that's why I do my own work. I'm not paying somebody to mess things up. That's why I wanted to tap the vast knowledge base here, to find someone with experience working on older Yamaha's.
