Default Memorial Day: Your Favorite Patriotic Song With Guitar in It

I always like to celebrate our vets on Memorial Day. Thank you, ladies and gentleman, for your valuable service to our country.

I'm proud to say that my father fought in WWII in the Pacific. Love and Miss you, Dad.

Here's my entry. If you've never seen Guy Van Duser play "The Stars & Stripes Forever" solo on a nylon guitar, you're in for a real treat. Love those piccolos!

Please tell us about any family members you have who have served this amazing country.

Enjoy!

There's not a lot of "real guitar" in my favorite patriotic song, but still... I've always loved Lee Greenwood's "God Bless the USA". I used to hate all "country" music. But that one was the exception (if you can call it country). I saw him perform it in Vegas in '94. If I was king, I'd make it our national anthem.

I am a Viet Nam vet, and I just stumbled across this performance by Timothy P. Irvin and Jim Salestrom, the man playing the guitar, and it moved me to tears. Great song, good guitar and singing, great message. I only heard about it on the way to work, a local radio personality plays it on his talk show on the Memorial Day and Veterans Day holidays. I heard it this morning eating breakfast at McDonalds, almost choked on my food. Hope you enjoy!

I have learned to play chords along with it. Fun, and sometimes I choke up. I could never sing it!

The only patriotic song I do in my acoustic guitar group stuff is Woody Guthrie's "This Land is Your Land." The folks I play for love it and sing along.

Chokes me up too. The Star Spangled Banner generally doesn't move me much.

For myself, that song exemplifies patriotism better than any other I've ever heard.

This Memorial Day I will share this song by Mary Gauthier. She has been working with vets in supporting them in writing songs that reflect their experiences and using song and music as a means of expressing some of the hard emotions that come from living through a war. I cannot think of more patriotic songs than the ones that come from this process. And I really think the guitar playing here is perfect for the song.

Best,
Jayne

Coming In On A Wing And A Prayer was recorded as a guitar piece by Joseph Spence and later covered by Ry Cooder.
