Default That New J45.....String Realisation

Some may remember my first post on getting a long awaited J45...
https://www.acousticguitarforum.com/...d.php?t=506296

Well like many, I fell in love with the lush sound but figured the strings that came with it must have been on there for weeks if not months and played by all manner of people in the shop. Couldn't wait to see how much better it would sound with my favourite Elixir Nanoweb 12s.

Wrong!

Completely killed the tone; even my wife said 'why does that guitar not sound as good anymore?'. Now this isn't about bashing Elixirs. I've used them for over 20 years and been very happy. However, it was either the strings or this was the shortest guitar honeymoon period I had ever had.

Yesterday I swapped them out for some Gibson Masterbuilt PBs. Figured this was the sound I fell in love with so why not start there? Result - perfect, back to where it was originally and I can't put it down. Only question is how long will they last, but at a third of the price of the Elixirs it's got to be worth a shot.

The question I have now is whether to try some different options on my other guitars. I can't help feeling that I may not have been hearing their true potential all these years......

Have you tried D'addario exp's, They are coated but don't feel coated, not to me anyway.

I'm not a fan of coated strings but like so many i would trash un-coated strings in a day because of my sweaty mits!

It's a compromise with me.

Hey 5thumb, if you are in the mood for experimenting...Martin Monel Retro sound way cool on my 45 and they last and last and last.....12's or 13's. Makes that Nick Drake sound..... if thats what you are into.

Well, interestingly, after reading up on here I also bought some John Pearse which I'll also try next but both the Monels and Exp's will be on my list too. Thanks both.

Yep...a lot of us like Retros on our 45s. I did. But I recently gave Santa Cruz Mid Tension string a try and love them. Give you the volume of mediums while playing like lights.

I have settled on the Monels for the tone that I like and the Tony Rice gauge is perfect for me and my J-45.

I have used the following strings on my J-45 (almost all 12-53):

D'Addario NB
Martin Retros
Santa Cruz Low Tension
John Pearse Nickel wounds
Martin 1400 silk and steel
Martin Titaniums
Martin Flexible Cores
D'Addario EJ11 80/20
Gibson Masterbilt 80/20

The only strings that made the guitar sound "off" were the Silk and Steel.

I play finger style so YMMV.

The answer is to experiment with different strings to see what YOU prefer and like. I use at least 6 different string types at any given time because, as you found, strings do matter. Even if I like the sound and feel of specific strings on a guitar, I try several different makes, gauges, compounds.. to see where it takes me on every guitar. Sometimes that means going back to the original strings and other times it means greater enjoyment of that instrument as a result of experimenting. For what it's worth, I've found I like Gibson Masterbuilt strings on my Gibsons as well.

When new, my j45 crw came from the factory with Masterbuilt 80/20s. They lasted 21 days. The second set that was included with the case candy lasted 21 days. Since then, I tried many strings and liked Curt Mangan bz coated and Elixer bz nanos. I think I might have finally settled on Santa Cruz Mid Tension strings because of their playability.

My J-45 likes Masterbuilt 80/20 The Ernie Ball Earthwood 80/20 light strings also sound great on both my J-45 and my J-15

Has anyone tired the John Pearse 610LM Silk and Phosphor Bronze Acoustic Guitar Strings, Light/Medium on their J45?

The description really intrigues me: .012, .016, .024, .032, .042, .053 The exciting new SILKS sets mark a departure from orthodox acoustic string design. Formulated for the electric guitarist who doubles on acoustic, this set features a never before possible "playing ease" tension married with the warmth and projection for which our acoustic strings are famous. Our triple annealed mild steel is pulled through a draw plate to make an extra skinny core. Onto this is wound a silk multifilament which cushions a phospor bronze winding. This is NOT a silk and steel set. The natural edginess of the phosphor bronze winding is tempered by the silk cushion to produce a tone that studio players everywhere are likening to our 80/20 bronze sets after they have been played in

Hmmm. I'll have to check that out.

Another Santa Cruz user here. Love them. I doubt I’ll ever buy another set of Elixirs...just haven’t had good luck with them

I have 3 untried new sets that a fellow AGFer sold me recently.
They came with a new set of GHS Silk & Bronze that I have used before and yes, they are NOT like Silk & Steels.
They feel, sound and play more like PB's ... but with more warmth and depth.
