Default Ledward Was in Town

The next best thing to going to Hawai`i is having Hawai`i come to us. After we kidnapped Ledward Kaapana and his wife some years ago they've made our home their regular stop when they are working in NorCal. If at all possible, Led and I try to get a few clips in the can. We've been doing videos together for a while now and it can be a bit challenging to come up with new tunes that are interesting as instrumentals and possible for me to play. This time I broke all precedent and actually practiced a couple of songs before Led arrived and of course he was ready to go the first time he heard them.

I've been trying to get Led interested in composite guitars for some years now, his old Martin 000-16 (long scale dovetail version from early 90s) really suffers from traveling between Hawai`i and the mainland and carbon fiber just makes sense. And I found a nice old Composite Acoustics OX here on the forum then had it tweaked by the guys at Wood Street Guitar in Oakland. Once Led got his hands on the OX he was very enthusiastic about it so that wound up in our video sessions. I went for my OM-18GE.

The first tune I edited from the session is a John K. Almeida number from the 1930s, "He Wahine U`i:"

Gosh, Fran, I do so look forward to your posts! Wish you and Led could get together more often.

Your playing, of course, is superb, as always. Love the way you've both developed the tune. But, I'm totally surprised at how well the carbon fiber blends with wood while playing slack key. Makes it sounds a little bit more Hawaiian, IMO.

Thanks for posting this, and I'm looking forward to the next one!

Derek, thank you. That feeling of relaxation is one that slack key aims for so I'm gratified that it worked for you.

Hey Doug, I was pretty pleased with the sound of the CA, especially on the recording. It sounds a little bit wookie behind the guitar, but not too bad out front. And Led really liked the neck and the setup job. I'm looking forward to trying the pickup.

After years of playing "turn that darned thing down" electric guitar I was surprised that I fell in love with the "nahenahe" feel of slack key. But once it heard it I was hooked, and now I'm trying to capture as many ears as possible. Thanks for listening.
