Default NGD - Larry Dumas #142, "The Experiment"

"Long time lurker, first time poster" alert, lol...

Well, for my 30th birthday, I did a thing...

A couple or three years ago, while visiting a church in Mt. Airy, NC, a friend invited us over to talk to Larry Dumas and check out his guitar shop and some of his finished work and WIP guitars.

I had just bought my Taylor 410, so I wasn't in the market for a guitar at the time, but I was really interested in Mr. Dumas' work and the fact that he makes guitars that are "outside the norm".

While visiting White Plains for a few days this weekend, the same friend who introduced us to Mr. Dumas posted a couple Dumas Guitars for sale. I had already been planning to stop by and look at another guitar he had, but it went off the market before we even got to his house. When we got there, I picked this one up, and it was love at first strum... It's a cannon but still sparkles on the high end and the wood used on it looks amazing!

So, what is it?

This is the Larry Dumas, #142, aka "The Experiment", and it's one of the world's few custom-made guitars to use pine as the wood for the back and sides... Southern yellow pine, to be more precise.

"But you can't make a good sounding guitar out of pine! Especially not out of a board found at Lowes!"

Mr. Dumas begs to differ...

Specs:

Body/Sides/Neck: Southern Yellow Pine
Binding: Maple
Top: Engelmann Spruce
Fretboard/Bridge: Persimmon
Saddle: Bone
Headstock: White Oak
Tuners: Gotoh Closed Gear, Black
Bracing: X-Bracing
Finish: Varnish

Thank you sir! Didn't notice it was messed up when I posted it, but I changed it in my original as well.

Thank you for the kind words, but the player is a gentleman named Cody Tucker from the church there in Mt. Airy. We played for several hours last night and I asked him to play a bit for me to record, as I'm normally a rhythm/accompaniment guitarist than a flat-picker.

Chris, Welcome to the AGF and glad you went from a Lurker to a Contributor!

What a wonderful guitar. I really enjoy your playing and that tune.

BTW, I spent a few weeks at a client site in Charleston WV two years ago and spent a couple of week-ends driving around the state. What a beautiful state.
