I have a similar "problem" with the mandocello. My local shop has 5 in stock now (1 that is amazing) and I find it hard to resist, even though I know nothing of the cello (I do play the mandolin (and banjo - I have 2 ;-) ) a little)

The 5-String Banjo is a mean *****, which may require a trip to the cross-roads and your soul....

I agree, and when you finally "get it" it may be too late to turn back to the normalcy of just a six-string gut-box!

I bought a banjo to learn clawhammer, and also a ukulele, a few months ago, and then broke the radius in my right arm about eight weeks ago near the elbow. It was painful to rotate my arm or pluck the guitar, but i could practice clawhammer with no pain after only a couple of weeks. Guitar was not comfortable, and the ukulele was right out, due to the standard picking technique that involves a lot of rotation.
The banjo is a Gold Tone AC-1: composite rim, quite inexpensive, but it sounds quite fine, and came perfectly set up. |
