In the late 1970's a student of mine, Andy Pitt, called to say he'd just heard an amazing guitarist named Woody Mann. Andy's next door neighbor, a pianist, had told Andy to come over to meet a guitarist that he was working with.
Both of them were studying jazz improvisation with Lennie Tristano. Andy became an immediate fan, especially when he heard Woody play Reverend Gary Davis pieces. He really was an otherworldly talent, and an exemplary human being. Here's a perfect example of what, no doubt, grabbed Andy's attention: I don't remember when I first met Woody, but it was most likely at John Monteleone's shop or house. Woody's passing has touched John very, very deeply. Some shots from The Jazz Loft in Stonybrook, NY Sept.2019   RIP Woody. HE

Woody Mann
Hello, Guitar Friends—Perhaps some of you have already heard this sad news, but American guitarist, composer, and teacher extraordinaire Woody Mann has died. I just read about it myself on another forum. Gosh. Woody was just about the greatest guitarist I have run across and a truly engaging and warm teacher. I have several of his instructional videos. Just thought I’d pass this along.

Woody Mann RIP
Just heard that Woody Mann has passed away. Such sad news and the loss of a truly great and inspirational player. He was equally adept across blues, ragtime and jazz. I did a few workshops taught by him here in the UK over the years, and he was such a lovely guy - genius player and teacher but humble and generous. Worth checking out his recordings or teaching material if you don't know of his work. I'm genuinely gutted to have heard this news. Anybody else here met him or been to one of his workshops/concerts?

I first took lessons with Woody at The Guitar Study Center at The New School in NYC in the 80s. I’d heard that Jorma Kaukonen was teaching there at the time, but his classes filled up immediately. Looking through the course catalog I saw Woody’s classes listed. I hadn’t heard of him, but the course descriptions sounded perfect and I signed up. How lucky for me. I took a lot of classes and seminars with him over the years.

This is very sad news. I got to see him play live just once; when he toured the UK in 2018 and played at my home town of Lancaster. I've very much enjoyed his books and instructional videos over the years. An absolutely stellar player, but a really nice, ordinary and kind chap too - I once contacted him about one of his videos and received an email from the man himself within a day or two. I play a lot of his arrangements, particularly his take on Rev. Gary Davis tunes. My favourite player of the guitar.
