Default New guitars are like new cars

Shiny when new.
Smell wonderful.
Impress the friends.

Lose substantial value as soon as you take possession in most cases.

Totally. BUT, guitars eventually stabilize at some value, whereas cars eventually depreciate to junk. Unless they become collectible.

I always chalk up the loss in value to the time I got to enjoy playing them... Maybe it's this line of thinking that keeps me broke...

Lose MONETARY value. The value, for instance, of being able to go into the little office in my house, take my OM out of its case, and play for an hour and lose my stress temporarily is priceless. The value of that guitar increased ten-fold when I took possession of it. It wouldn't resell for that, but then I don't care as I do not plan to ever sell it. I do, however, plan to play it until it resembles Trigger.

"Except for Jaguars! Ha ha."

Isn't that why we have 2...so there is one to drive while the other one is in the shop?

Oh wait that is a joke from the seventies. Were we talking about guitars?

Bingo! And guitars last many times over what a car does.

After 36 years, my Santa Cruz is worth about 350% more than I paid for it.
After 15 years the Merrill is worth about 25% more.
After 7 years the Brondel is worth about 20% more.
After 2 years the Northwood is about 30% less.

Buy when you’re young. Hold on for the long haul. Sell it when the hands are useless.

With new guitars, like new cars, there is also...for many...the fear of the first scratch or dent...which sadly causes some owners to become "polishers" instead of "players".

I differ with your third statement on both counts.
None of my friends were impressed with my new cars or new guitars when I acquired them.
Most of them have nice cars and all guitars look the same to them.

Most of the people around these parts like to talk about how good of guitar they bought for not spending much money. The deal seems to be more important than the guitar.
