Default Larrivee OM-40 mahogany

Hi Larrivee fans... anyone have experience with this model? I'm thinking of adding a versatile OM to my collection and this one has been on my radar given the price point. I would use this guitar mainly for strumming and fingerstyle, and would probably serve as my grab-and-go guitar. Anyone have thoughts on this model as well as its rosewood variation?

I'm a total amateur player but had the pleasure of sampling the rosewood model at a local store last week. I would say that it checks all of the boxes on your list. Very nice neck, comfortable body and I loved the tone from the first strum. I play a lot of fingerstyle and the string spacing is very nice so it was wonderful in that department also.

I can't see how you could go wrong with this guitar.

Good luck and happy strumming!!!

Have you played one you like?

I've watched all of the videos, and this seems like a good choice for what you want. I am also lookin at the OM-40 as well as the 12 fret 000-40.

You might also ask over at the Larrivee forum.

I had one for about a year.
Wonderful sounding guitar ...
Had nice full bass unlike any OM I have ever played.
These are great guitars and excellent values.

I had a Larrivee D-40R, and based on that, buy the Larrivee OM-40 as a nice-priced alternative for super OM tone OR forever succumb to the online-opinioned comments of buy this, buy that.

Well, you won't be the first to buy first try later. Me included. Many on here been there as well. Have you considered the Martin 15 series?

Default Larivee

Does Karivee use a compound radius neck on all of their models?

It seems like the mahogany "40" models are harder to come by than their rosewood counterparts? But I prefer what Larrivee does with mahogany much more than their EIR guitars. Just my 2 cents/personal preference?

I would talk to John at Shoreline. He would give you all the information you would need on the OM-40 and likely a great deal if you wanted to purchase one.

Ive had both, rosewood and mahogany. They are truly fantastic guitars. Quality second to none, greatest value in a USA-made instrument, IMO. The tone is unique to Larrivee....very clear, balanced, and articulate. The fretboards are pretty flat, which I found to be problematic for me. However, you may LOVE the feel of the neck...many do.

I would recommend giving them a try. Tonewood choice is very subjective. I currently have wan OM03 in Australian Lacewood that is great. Trying to come to grips with the fretboard issue. Work with a good dealer that accepts returns if you don’t want to keep it. The 40 series instruments are great!

The OM-40 was "revoiced" to be more Martin-like (as were all -40 models) and have the enhanced bass response found in Martins. I prefer the original Larrivee sound so I prefer the OM-03, 05, and 09. But quibbling aside, Larrivee makes an exceptional OM and guitars in general. If you can't try one, find someone with a generous return policy and get one. Mahoghany or rosewood, they all sound great.

I've had mine for 3 months and really like it. Very balanced and handles strumming well as long as it's not too heavy handed. It's a couple years old but in very nice shape. Its top is Austrian Red Spruce or Moon Spruce per Larivee', maybe a limited run?

You can't go wrong with a Larrivee OM.
