Default What about Zager

OK, it's been since March since I bought a guitar and I'm itching for another one.

Can anyone tell me about Zager?

Thumbs down Nah, dude

Do yourself a favor and do a thread search on this brand. They will speak for themselves.

I would choose my next guitar and all those thereafter based on alphabetical order.

rstaight, what Mr. Zager does is get inexpensive imported entry level guitars and sets them up for extra light strings. He does enough volume at this that these days he gets his brand logo on the headstocks of the instruments he gets built by Asian manufacturers.

Then he charges about three times what it would cost you to buy a similar quality guitar from someone else and get it set up the same way.

He makes an enormous profit, which is fine, there's nothing illegal about that. But he uses misleading advertisements and PR material to convince beginning guitarists that his guitars are widely respected.

They're not widely respected by most musicians who know about them, and neither is he.

As has been suggested, do a search on Zager guitars on this forum. Most of us on this forum with any significant musical experience are appalled by him and his guitars.

I’ve never responded to a Zager thread but I will this time. When I was a teenager, I always changed the radio when that song In the Year 2525 was played. Absolutely made my skin crawl. Zager makes such a big deal out of his one hit song. Dudes who liked leisure suits must have loved it .

Basically confirmed my suspicions. I had never heard of them but seen and advertisement.

When I looked at the website it gave me the feeling it was mostly a warehouse.

Thanks for the input. Very much appreciated. May be another month before I hear those famous words from the missus. You bought another one? Where will you put it?

Again, thanks.

Despite all the negativity i would like to at least try one. Just to see to which degree the guitar lives up to its marketing and/or bad rep.

I went over to see a buddy that camps every year for the Bristol fall race and he asked me to play his new guitar and sing some songs. Well what he pulled out was a Zager. Honestly it was very easy to play and it came in a very nice hard shell case, but those are about the only nice things I could say about it. It was heavily glossed laminate wood so the sound was completely dead and the extra light strings couldn't move the top at all. But it was easy to play and I sang for the campground folks for a couple of hours and everybody had fun. He was pleased as punch with his new guitar and how it sounded and everybody that stopped by enjoyed themselves. I was obviously the only one who noticed that it sounded really bad. Now if I could have played it back to back with one of my higher quality guitars, people would have had no problem picking out which was the better guitar. But standing alone, no one noticed that it sounded bad.
