I've got one of the older ones, and it's a favorite of mine.

It might be Yairi's biggest seller through the years. It's a D-28 knockoff, obviously, with a solid top and laminate b/s. I've played 3-4 through the years, and all of them had gorgeous wood, especially the tops. Ebony fret board and bridge.

The tone on mine is brighter than a D-28, with more chime. Terrific tone, and it records really well. I use Elixer Lights, have for years.

It has long been my travel guitar, as it is pretty beat up by previous owners. It gets babied by me now, but I certainly don't have to worry much about dings and dents. Not a single crack in it, though.

Congrats on a wise purchase! What year is yours?

Should be a lot like a D28. They're great guitars.... and greatly under-valued.

It is a 1985 dy74,bought on reverb
I just sent back a dy39 that was sweet, but the action
Was too high and not a lot of saddle left
Indicated a neck reset
This one is a higher up model so should be Xtra sweet
Hopefully no problems

From what I have heard, that is a good way to describe the tone. Martin-like but brighter.

Just put on a set of Martin Retros on my DY-59 and this is the first time I've liked the sound of the strings right after I put it on. I usually dislike the sound for the first few days when I change strings. The retros tamed the brightness slightly and made the guitar sound really balanced. I hope the sound doesn't change too much as the strings settle in.

I owned '96 DY-74 and it gave me the Yairi bug. Sold it to buy a DY-90, but it stood tall by itself. I bought a dozen solid tonewood $1-2K dreads by big makers and liked the DY-74 best of all, except the 90. Excellent projection, volume and body, and great clarity. Real punch and drive. The description as a "brighter, louder" D-28 is about right. I really like D'Addario nickel bronze lights on both of my Yairis. It mellows and rounded the top a bit, yet is very clear.

Yairi's are really fantastic, well made, great sounding and are a bargain because the Alvarez name is associated with them here in NA. Some real marketing genius right there.

Mine is a 1999 WY-1 left hand Cedar and Rosewood with an Ebony fret board and the sound and looks are just gorgeous.
