But the whole point, or at least a big part of it, is to have a pickup tailored to your specific taste or guitar. I have 70s, 90s, and 100s in my dread, 00, and parlor respectively. It is not Teddy's thing to just sell say, 80s as a good average.

Granted it might be good business, but Teddy is all about tone, not money, bless him.

To be clear, the actual install isn't difficult at all - dab a little glue on a sensor and stick it on the bridgeplate, identical to K&Ks. No electronics, just run the wire to the end-pin jack. The "difficulty" comes if you want to try to dial in the best possible sound. With K&K's that's not an option - the second the superglue hits, you're locked into that position, so you'll never know if they could sound better a fraction of an inch over here, or a 1/4 inch over there.

Since Teddy uses a slow-drying glue, you can actually move the pickup around while listening and try to dial in your "best" tone - so it's a feature. (Trance does the same thing with tape - tho you have to remove and restick with fresh tape each time) You could choose to ignore it, and just put them in a standard place, and apparently Teddy now feels he's done enough of these that he knows where the "standard place" is, so you can just put the pickup in place and be done with it, as long as you don't start asking "what if I moved it just a bit...?". So as with many things, it's pretty simple if you just go with defaults, and as complicated/difficult as you want to make it if you want to customize.

According to Teddy, installation is pretty straightforward. He walked me through the install process and it really seems like less trouble then when I installed the Fishman Matrix.

At first the whole number thing seemed like overkill - but after we chatted it really seems to be more because the pickups need to deal with inconsistencies of frequency response from guitar to guitar. It makes sense. A D28 has a very different response than an 812 or a J45.

Anyway - going to take the plunge and give them a try.

I did a quick and dirty reference recording last night of a new song. I just grabbed my Dazzo equipped Guild and went direct into my MOTU Track 16. The Guild D 35 is an exceptionally balanced dread, and the Dazzos are matched to it. I was astounded how good it sounded. No EQ, reverb, or anything else was needed. I just got a lifelike recording.

Well, not that first time through recording. I'll try to get something together comparing all three Dazzo equipped guitars, but in the meantime, I believe Doug Young has recordings on his web site.

The point I'm trying to make re: Dazzos, is that since I put a set in one guitar I haven't bought anything else. I'm not chasing the holy grail like Doug Young is. I just like something that works. I know people that have K & K minis in all their guitars. If you find something you know you like, why not stick with it?

Dazzo into RedEye into amp/PA works well for me. And yes, supporting a cottage industry is part of the equation, as is being able to have Teddy put the pickups in. He is a far more critical guy than I, and will not stop until he is happy. May be his own worst enemy in that regard, as I probably think they sound good wherever they are placed.

Hey Jon ,
Im finding out now that using that 5 or 6 minuet two part clear epoxy gel works just fine because the gel is gooey and gives you the opportunity to move the pickup nice and straight so its perfectly placed - in a 60 second window !
AND
You don't have to move it around while listening to it like before , just position it right while its wet , dont worry about clamping it in : let the glue worry about that when it shrinks .
Other than smearing an light film on the wood part
just a half drop on pickup will do .
I haven had luck yet with the tape because it doesn't sound the same unless I am missing something

Just a follow up on this thread, since I started it.

I have a set of Dazzo 70s on the way to me. Teddy was awesome during the whole process and we talked many times (for quite some time) before I pulled the trigger. I can't recommend him enough. He's a genuine guy who really cares about the people who buys his pickups.

Once I get them installed I'll let you know what I think. Given how particular he seems to be about tone, I'm expecting these to be excellent pickups.

I spent an interesting afternoon with Teddy last weekend. I got a lot of insight into his pickup installs, got some great tips on how to solder as neatly as Teddy!, and came away with a set of 70s in my Martin OM, which sound very good. I'll get samples up on my pickup page sometime soon.

We spent most of the day experimenting with different tapes, without hitting on a viable solution. The tone wasn't bad, and things started out very promising, but the volume was greatly reduced, and the sound overall wasn't as rich. I hope he keeps at it, and finds a tape that will work.

So I installed the Dazzos and have to say I'm impressed. They sound very good. I'm going to tweak the placement of the treble pickup a bit to get a little more presence from the 1st string, but that isn't saying these are inadequate in any way. I think the issue is more the fact that my older Taylor has the "smiley face" bridge pin configuration and makes aligning the pickups a little more of a challenge.
