Space Time
I saw a thread called Falling Slowly, a nice duet. My first thought upon seeing the thread was space / time as the 4th dimension. I've spent waay too much time on youtube watching particle and quantum theorists, cosmologists and the like it would appear. Facinating stuff tho.

Interesting... why did Falling Slowly trigger thoughts of spacetime?

Everything is in free fall. What we call gravity is know in physics as the 4th dimension, or as space / time. Space time is a warping of the fabric of space, that is, objects of mass cause space to bend, or warp. I'll not try to sound smarty about it, it's an interest of mine, I'm no physicist. But it's true. The world of particles and atoms is soo cool. What a world

You can't talk science on this forum, watch...........

Time = gravity.
I think, therefore my head hurts,

I'm watching an episode of Star Trek Enterprise (again) nearly every night and there are some crazy things that happen in that 4th dimension of time. Great show.

Studying science is like climbing up a tree. The higher you go, the more you discover how much you do not yet know.

A big shout out to the Kansas Astronomical Observers, a non profit group that resurrected the Lake Afton Public Observatory here just outside Wichita. The Wichita State University and Segwick County ran it for 40 years but abandoned it recently (apparently 80k per year is a budget buster). I went out last night to see the Perseids and have a look through the telescope, of Richey Cretian design 16 inch model, same telescope design as whats in the Hubble. Couldn't get a foot in the door there was such a turn out. It is outreach programs like this and science communicators like Brian Cox and Neil deGrass Tyson that keeps science and technology in the public eye, so very important. To think that the University could just toss off an investment into the future for such a measly sum, yet pay a basketball coach millions just floors me. And the County, 80k doesn't pay for a single piece of road equipment, of which they have acres of lots filled. Shame on both of them. Nature is a wonderous gift, enjoy!

a 16" RC is a rather expensive scope, my guess is they do a lot of imaging there,
on another note, i really dont consider time as a 4th dimension

When you write any metric, time is the fourth dimension.

Robj I stand corrected, indeed time alone is our 4th dimension. I'm getting my head around a lot of physics these days and I misspoke. As a student many years ago I was unable understand algebraic expressions and thus did not get as far in the maths and sciences as I would have liked. Even now algebra just as well be written in sanskrit. But what with Youtube and the ability to watch lectures I'm understanding not only the large but also the infinitely small universe and their properties. So cool. We live in such an age of enlightenment. I'm stoked for the James Webb telescope as well as results from the LHC at CERN. These things are important and we need the public and government to get behind them. Be well.

https://optcorp.com/products/tpo-16-...-ota-telescope Mind you, that URL just points to the OTA (optical tube assembly), NOT the mount, which can add a good 15,000 more. But still. And if it is 40 years old (as the post seemed to indicate) RC were pretty standard for semi-professional level facilities.

Of course if you DO want to go for a pricey RC....
https://optcorp.com/products/planewa...e-ota-pw700-rc Only $8065.47 a month! It is fully automated though. A member of our astronomy club, a rather wealthy fellow, left a whack of money in his will to the society. We have a similar 'scope to this. It is 2500 miles away in Arizona and is fully programmable over the internet.
