Four guitars. My first, an Applause 6 string from the 70's now tuned all in 5ths F to E, an '82 Ovation 12 string, an Altamira M20D and an Eastman MDC805 mandocello converted to a 6 string archtop. Also have a cheapo Davison 6 string banjo (guitar tuning) with reentrant tuned E and A that I inherited. My custom 10 string mandocello covers a standard guitar range and then some. Then we get to the mandolins (7, all very different - F4, F5, banjolin, resonator, 10 string 'dola, cheapo Chinese Ibanez, one electric), two octave mandolins, 5 fiddles (one straight violun, one octave violin, a 5 string viola, 5 string octave viola, 10 string Hardanger). The Eastman, mandocello, Hardanger and F5 mando get the most play.
I'd still like to get a sweet sounding resonator (guitar) and maybe a 5 string banjo. Maybe a tenor 'uke. I've learned not to bother with low end beginner cheap instruments anymore. Last edited by Mandobart; 12-13-2018 at 11:26 AM. |

I voted in the poll before I read the first post. I voted 4-6 but that includes my electrics - and I couldn't change my vote once I'd cast it. If I'd limited to acoustics, it would have been 2-4. It's 3 at the moment, but one of them is either going to live on the west coast with my daughter for when we do extended visits out there, or I'm gonna sell it. So functionally, I have two, both carbon fiber, one full size (not jumbo - sized like a 000 but sounds like a dread) and one parlor. It's one more than I need and exactly as many as I want. I've got three electrics and I may downsize to two but I'll probably sit tight for a while.
I definitely don't want any more - I may want less. -Ray Last edited by raysachs; 12-13-2018 at 02:32 PM. |

I'm happy with the 5 listed in my sig. Over the last 50 years or so, I have often GASsed for a 12 string, but have never actually bought one. I've never played a resonator, so ...

I have two, a six string and a 12 string. Both are dreads. I would like a nice parlour but it's a want, not a need.

Nothing terribly valuable. I have two old "beaters" - an Ovation Celebrity CS-257 and an Epiphone PR-350. I'd like to have a nicer acoustic, such as a Taylor 714 or 814, but that will have to wait a few months.
I have two electrics as well, a Kramer 450G and a Gretsch G2655T.

How many.....?
Currently 4, but 4 keepers. I was up to 16-18 about 3 years ago.

I currently own 9 guitars after selling one last week and have another on order for May/June delivery, which will bring it up to 10. I have a soft limit of 10 guitars. Rarely do I exceed 10, or drop below 8. Seems right for me at this time of my life.

A warning to those who tread here. When I joined the Forum five years ago I owned two guitars and one mandolin. I now own four mandolins and about 12 guitars.

As of now, there are seven people with 20 or more, and only three with 1 guitar. That surprises me.
