probably what i appreciate most about artists like Billy.
He is riding in a genre that is steeped in rather strict tradition.
He adeptly weaves in and out of that with apparent ease.
Not easy to do in The Bluegrass world. Where it's Monroes way
or the highway at times. I love some of the early stuff
he did with Don Julin.

These boys were doing pretty well with it 30 years ago!

" strict" only to those that are shackled by insecurity, fear and/or the self anointed of limited creative talent.

As I have said before tradition is important because it the launch pad to creativity, not the ceiling

As fitnes 1 noted it's been going on for a good while . And real the irony is that Alison Krauss and Union Station have probably done more to bring awareness of Bluegrass to a wider audience than any performer in history . Lucky for music they did not let boxes and ceilings define them.

That's what I was thinking. I think what he's doing is awesome.

Default Solo Billy Strings On His New Preston Thompsom Dreadnought Adirondack/Brazilian

Nice amplified tone from Billy and his new Thompson Adirondack Spruce/Brazilian Rosewood Dreadnought! By the by, I agree that Billy's band could be more animated but they're tight!

RECOMMENDED: Enjoy In Larger-Screen YouTube Format Here!

Old thread, but I figured I'd update it after seeing Billy Strings play a local venue last night. The tone from his Thompson dreadnaught was incredible and prompted me to talk to his sound guy after the show. Billy uses a K&K pickup (sound guy said he didn't know which one off the top of his head, but I'm guessing it's a Pure Mini), and blends that with an on-board mic. I was told it's an "Audio Technica AT 350 modified for his guitar."
