This is very sad. As long as there are truly poor and hungry people and people that will pay for illegal natural products, it will continue.

Stop if you're buying illegally sourced rosewood.

Mine is legal.

From the last few paragraphs...
Quote:
As Guatemala grapples internally with preserving its rosewoods, an external threat looms. At the meeting of CITES this month in Geneva, the treaty’s 183 signatories will consider an amendment that would exempt rosewood for use in musical instruments and their component parts, as well as rosewood products weighing less than 500 grams, from trade restrictions.

Lobbied for by U.S. and European instrument companies, who argue that they were "collateral damage” in restrictions targeting "the furniture industry,” as the U.K.-based Music Industries Association put it, the change would increase demand for the precious hardwood. It’s expected to pass, and if it does, says CONAP’s Beltetón, the burden would fall on instrument manufacturers outside Guatemala to ensure the sustainable origin of their rosewood.

These final two paragraphs are key for us guitar players; I’m still trying to understand the implications of it. I guess in the final analysis the use of domestic woods like Gibson is doing with some of their models is the only real solution to a problem that involves complex world wide corruption. I wonder if Taylor is immune to this problem of corruption with their supply of ebony, on the other hand.

I bypassed the issue and went with walnut. It's ok, I'm not very good anyway so I don't need those lush overtones on all my wrong notes.

True; with some rosewood guitars like the Martin OM the sustain must always be reigned in to achieve clear note separation - kind of like a fast car with lots of braking; reckless driving leads to bad accidents/ error. Accuracy is always paramount.

From the article:

Quote:
The emergence of Guatemala's illegal rosewood trade has been driven largely by demand among China’s nouveau riche for traditional Ming and Qing dynasty-style rosewood furniture. Between 2009 and 2014, customs data analyzed by the Environmental Investigation Agency, a U.K.-based nonprofit, show a 14-fold increase in rosewood imports to China from around the world. This expansion coincided with (and contributed to) the decimation of preferred Southeast Asian rosewoods, which earlier had replaced depleted native rosewoods in southern China. Buyers searched for new sources, and Guatemala, which has at least four commercially desirable species, was one.
This is why somebody suggests a guitar I know is made in China I dismiss it almost immediately. I won't say anything further because discussion would delve into politics and ethics.

FWIW I love rosewood as a tonewood from the perspective of a guitar player a hobbyist guitar maker. I haven't bought any raw rosewood since it went under CITES protection just in case and my last raw lumber purchase was walnut.

My grand mother was Brazilian and had a lot of nice rosewood furniture. When she passed away in the 70s years ago my mother brought all her furniture up to the states. My Mom passed away 7 years ago and the furniture is now in my possession. I always look at the beautiful rosewood and think of how many guitars it could make. However, my kids have already said they want the furniture, probably more for sentimental reasons as today's styles are so different.
