Classical guitar background but I use the right leg (as do flamenco guitarists as well as some classical guitarists). Using the left leg tends to strain my back.

Either when I fingerpick (95%) or flat pick.
If too lazy and doesn't want to grab a support I still rest guitar on left leg.

As I was inclined to play classical guitar, I learned to place it on left thigh.
As I took folk guitar fingerstyle private lessons, I was taught the right thigh
would help solve some technical problems coming with the longer 14 fret neck.
I am now using either right or left thigh depending on the guitar style and neck lenght.

Classical players also prop their left foot 6" in the air and point the neck nearly at the ceiling - but it's not just for ergonomics. And the longer they play that way the more back problems they develop. There are more trending towards using lifts these days.

I use a NeckUP lift and use it from the right leg with the headstock elevated to chin level. I've been using NeckUP lifts for over 15 years now. I think I use them for stability more than ergonomics, though they are probably related.



It allows me to work with both feet flat on the floor, and folds and goes under the headstock in my cases (or in a pick drawer, or in my gear bag). I don't always sit when I play, but when I do, a NeckUP is always with me.

I am a righty, and while I like playing on my left leg I find it more comfortable to play on my right. That might be due to the strain I feel in my back when playing on my left leg. I have degenerative disc disease so that will be a factor in the back strain. Maybe if I wasn't sitting on the edge of the couch it might not bother me so much.

My only acoustic is a dreadnought and I am not sure how it would be playing that on my left leg. Tele, Les Paul, and SG are fine but am not sure about my ES-335 either.

I guess I wouldn't know how to answer this question off-hand,
but today I played several guitars at a guitar store while sitting
in a chair. Right off the bat I had to move a big glomp of stuff,
wallet, keys, whatever, from my right pocked to my left so
the guitar would be sitting on me and not a giant goiter.

So... I'm going with "right" .

Seated (always these days), I'll usually use a guitar support (Guitarrest), and most always cross my right leg over my left and let the guitar settle into my lap on my right thigh. Neck is pointed up via the support, but not excessively so. In this way I can lean back into the chair and not mess my back up with hunching over. I also find the guitar support allows for a pretty consistent neck/guitar position all the time and this helps with playing accuracy and attack.
