Wow, this is tough limiting it to just three (so I kind of cheated)...
Bob Dylan - Not the greatest vocalist IMO; but his songwriting is legendary, with more songs being copied by other professional artists than maybe anyone else is history. Jackson Browne - An oustanding lyricist. A prime example - "...and we'll fill in the missing colors in each other's paint by number dreams." Neil Young & James Taylor (tie) - Classic singer/songwriters that have stood the test of time and are still going strong 40-50 years later.

As folks have already said - this is challenging to narrow it to three, but for this morining, these are my 3 -
Martin Simpson - his guitar accompaniment always has amazing harmonies and interesting phrasings and rhythms. His playing is very melodic and brings so much emotion in support of the lyrics. Mary Chapin Carpenter - she is such a great lyricist and her guitar accompaniment always is so tasteful - blends really well with her great lead guitarist, John Jennings or just supports her voice with such a good balance if she is performing a song solo. Janis Ian - as a solo performer, she brings a lot of power with her guitar playing. Such small guitars she plays but she brings so much dynamics into the playing. Lots of textures and rhythms. I could add names but I will refrain since setting boundaries is a good thing to practice! Best, Jayne |
