Angry Aliens demand: “Choose ONE builder!”
Unfortunately for us Earthlings, a highly advanced race of space aliens has whisked all of the independent luthiers away from our planet, and has begun removing various guitar manufacturing companies one by one.
There are now only ten guitar makers left on earth. In a moment of mercy, the aliens announce that we may retain ONE guitar company. That’s all we will get for the foreseeable future. The other nine builders will be removed from our planet. Earthlings will have to vote for the one guitar maker that we get to keep. Whichever one is chosen may build guitars from its own catalog (and back catalog), but may not produce other companies’ models (e.g. Gibson may not make a D-18, etc.), unless such a model already exists in their own catalog. The selected company will be allowed to expand its facilities to meet demand. Here are the ten companies left on Earth. Which one would you vote for, and why?

They don't sound all that "highly advanced" to me!

That actually made me laugh out loud! Well, as is often the case with aliens, they are technologically advanced, but missing out on the soulfulness that makes us human. To their credit, though, they are trying to get some humanity into their race, and have decided that learning guitar will help get them there. That's why they need so many of our guitar builders.

I vote for the crafty independent builder that has alluded the aliens and is busily working in a cave at an undisclosed location of which the aliens are likely to remain unaware. Highly advanced can be overrated.
But for the sake of the poll and given there is no pizza option, I'll vote Martin. Best, Jayne |

Sometimes oddball thoughts enter my head. This was one. I was wondering which one builder I would pick if we only had one. At first I thought maybe Cordoba/Guild, because that would include guitars for all the classical players, but also give us all the Guild models, and I like how Guilds sound. Then I thought maybe I'd pick Taylor, because they have such a wide range of models, from low end to high, which would cover a lot of people. Then I thought maybe Yamaha should get the nod, because they seem to make everything-- from decent low-end models to high-end, and classical and steel string, etc. And my mind went off from there, and I thought, what the heck, it's a silly mind exercise, I wonder what the folks on this forum would think of? I hope that no harm will come of it.

Sounds to me like someone needs to go Randy Quaid on these alien idiots and blow them to kingdom come.

I'm sorry. I already have a day job, a family and too little time to practice guitar to worry about stuff like this.

Well, gotta be Martin 'cos they re-invented the acoustic guitar.
Gibson might also squeeze in as mandolin builders. Yamaha will continue to exist as they make everything, including motorbikes! I've forgotten the other candidates. Earth guitar resistance army - Ten..shun! Fix Capos! On my mark, STRUM!

A little off topic, but if you want to see a funny movie about space aliens that play guitar, check out The History of Future Folk:
Highly entertaining! |

+1 I believe the rebel builders are lead by the contingent from Guild, who were are not among the choices provided by the aliens. Perhaps too much of the alien's earthly brand research was consumed by their study of the new V class.
