Steve, I may have asked you this in February, but I don't remember. Is Tiger Myrtle related at all to Oregon Myrtle? It doesn't look similar at all.

Been busy on all kinds of fun things the past couple of months, but I thought I would revive the shop thread to post wood pictures. I’ve been going through our wood pile taking pictures of the sets we have on hand. Since I’m processing them, I thought I would show you what potential guitars are out there.
I’ll post a set or two a day for a while for your enjoyment. Starting off this week with Australian woods. I bet we have some that you have never heard or seen before. Curly Tasmanian Tiger Myrtle Of course there’s a video of our last Tiger Myrtle at the top of this page. Thanks for looking! |

Thanks Paul and Jamiejoon! Tiger Myrtle may be in the beech family, but the rest of our Australian woods share the same genus despite being radically different.
This set is particularly special to me as it’s the first set I bought for myself when I first started building. It’s still waiting to become a guitar. Curly Eucalyptus |

If you are taking requests from outside of Australia, I would love to see the set of Mesquite Steve alluded to the other day?

Tom, of course we’ll take requests - especially from fine fellows like yourself.

My simple shellacking doesn’t really do justice to how curly this set is. It’s going to pop under finish. Steve says that Mesquite is extremely stable.

In the same Order but not the same family. It's as close to beech as birch or walnut (all are in the same order). Interestingly, in looking this up, it appears that oak and chestnut are closer to beech, and in the same family (Fagaceae). I had no idea!
Beautiful wood picts! |
