NGD - Short Mountain Catalina Studio
I finally pulled the trigger on a guitar I have been considering for several months. It's from Doug Spencer, a small builder in Tennessee.
The back and sides are cherry from country singer John Anderson's farm. The fit and finish is really nice, except for the fret ends. Some are not flush with the edge of the fretboard (no binding on the fretboard). It's about the size of a grand concert - 14 7/8" lower bout, 8 1/2" waist, 10" upper bout; 3 1/2" deep at neck and 4 1/4" deep at the tail block. Short scale, C shape neck, 1.71" at nut. The neck is three piece cherry and ebony. The sound is very much like the Gibson LG-2 I've had but take that for what it's worth coming from an untrained, undiscerning ear! Action is good right out of the box. I was hesitant to buy from an unknown-to-me small builder but I'm not disappointed.
