Finally picked up an ipad2 a few days ago so I want to thank everyone who suggested the "OnSong" app. Definitely an intuitive and user-friendly program.
I love how it takes all the chords from your text file and just assigns a pop-up tab diagram for you, all of this straight from your DropBox (internet cloud server for the less cpu saavy). Throwing up notes with a few finger swipes while cradling the guitar, as oppose to grabbing a pencil or mouse, is invaluable.

Resisted falling into the Apple fold for years, but I finally understand when people say you can't compare it to a laptop. I spend all day at a computer so it's a breathe of fresh air when I want to play or travel. It's fast, simple, intuitive and just makes life easier. My only regret is not picking one up sooner.

Thanks again for the suggestions guys.

The port at the bottom of the iPad is a usb port. You just need an adaptor for the apple plug to a USB plug.

The reason Apple uses a brand-specific connector is because that port does a lot of work. It charges, carries HDMI video, takes USB connections, and probably some other stuff. Apple could not do what it wanted to do with a plain USB connector.

Is it really a true USB port??? I've been thinking about an iPad and wishing there was a way to turn pages with an inexpensive USB footswitch. I figured I was going to have to purchase something like this:

You bet. You just need the "camera connector" kit, which has the apple-USB converter. It works for a lot more than cameras.

Hi ss…
Only sometimes.

There are other options for page turners (bluetooth).

It is not a powered USB port, and sometimes works with external things and not always.

For those using Garageband or similar to do recordings, are you using the built-in mic on the iPad, or something else that plugs into it?

I have a Samson Go-mic but have yet to connect it to the Ipad.

It's a great Mic on my PC w/Audacity, so in addition to it's portability, I'm confident it will be a winner.

I just decided to download the OnSong app and try it out. How do you import all your Word files stored on a PC to this app?

Has anyone had any success using the USB Camera Port with any standard audio interfaces for recording? I have a MOTU Audio Express. Is there a way to record directly into the iPad?

In what way is the iMac better? Were you referring to ease of use? Isn't the sound quality of the recordings from both devices comparable? If different, were you using the same microphone for both?

I do it two ways:

From your computer:
1.) In your word document, place all chords in brackets.
(Example: [C], [Gm] etc...)

2.) Save the Word file into a plain text file.
(Example: "Stairway to Heaven-Led Zepplin.Onsong.txt)

2.) Go to itunes, click on your ipad, then go to the app sync interface. You scroll down and you'll see the OnSong icon with a window to the right. Add the text file there and when you sync it should be in Onsong.

From cloud storage:
A second option is via internet cloud (A space designated online where you can store your files.) Most of us use "DropBox"

1.) download Dropbox and register
2.) Save plain txt file into DropBox
3.) Open up Onsong, click on the "+" icon and import via DropBox. It should be straight forward from there.
