thanks for all the support !!! yeah getting older of course, but when i play out ,i just can't stop playing. hardly ever take a break, which is wrong. so i need 11-47 sets. weird ,but i can feel the difference between 11-52 and 11-47. they feel alot heavier, even though they aren't by much.

I have used custom lights or extra-lights on all my guitars for 57 years. I finger pick and simply find they sound better. I am playing a custom shop Martin
D-15M slope/slot right now and it just sings with extra-lights.

To each his own.

Try the Martin flexcore sometime. The tension is lower, so they feel lighter. Ditto with monels.

If so which brand are you using? just looking to explore a little... just tried Daddario EJ40"s. they seem ok. Thanks.
I've been using 80/20 extra lights (10 - 48) since 1970 on all of my acoustics.

When I first started playing a lot again almost 3 years ago, my hands / fingers were pretty weak, so I started back with 10-47 strings. Bought an 000-15M and started using 11-51. When my hands were up to it I switched to 12-54 but didn’t think they sounded as good on that guitar, so I went back to 11-51. Now I’m playing an Emerald X7 with a 24” scale and the lowest actionive ever had in an acoustic and I’m plying 12-54. Tried 13-56 and they play fine on this short scale, but I just don’t find they sound as good as 12-54 on this guitar. So it’s a combination of ease of play and what sounds best. On a D28 I played for years, heavier strings always sounded better. Withthe smaller body guitars I’ve been playing in recent years, that hasn’t been the case...

Default String Gauge

I've always contended that whether or not .11's or .10's will work with your guitar is specific to each instrument.

Some instruments are sensitive enough to work with lighter strings, some need more energy to get to top moving properly.

I like Larry's idea of starting folks off on very light strings then moving them up as they progress. The less frustrated they are the more they'll stick with it.

Couldn't imagine using strings that thin. Horses for courses.

I play 11-50's on most of my acoustics except for my AC240 has 12's.

I prefer 9's on electric and 10's for electric in open G.

I'm not old, but at 56, no kid either. My job and other hobbies (Massage Therapist, Muay Thai, boxing and strength training) all tax my hands in one way or another.

I don't mind fighting w/my heavy bag but don't care to fight with my guitars. I plug in at gigs, so ease of play is far more important to me than volume.

I use GHS phosphor bronze 11-50 strings. The low E string is heavier than what you are using but the rest of the strings are about the same. I have been using these strings for allot of years. They are between the 48s and 52s sets.

I put a similar set on an Alvarez RF26 that I gave to one of my grandsons.
I liked them on it.
I may try them on my New Yorker body Takamine soon.
I’ll try to get back with my reaction.
I did put a set of Silk and Steels on the Takamine.
It sounded very nice and it “opened up” with lighter strings.
Of course, I don’t know how it will hold up, as it was for sale, and someone met my price.

Is the guitar set up? I find lower action can make heavier strings less of a pain.
