Early 50's J-45 Tuner Replacement Recommendations
Hello smart people!
Long story, but I'm looking to replace the tuners on an early 50's J-45. Before you cringe, one of the posts is broken, so I think it is a necessary swap. Anyone have a brand they like that has worked? I've been eyeing these: Golden Age Trouble is, the guitar is not in front of me, so I can't take any measurements. I would be ordering the tuners "blind" so to speak, which is why I'm asking for your success stories. Actually the above link is option 2. Option 1: Gotoh

I would consult a good repair tech, for a guitar such as the one you describe, rebuilding the originals is IMO justified

You can get Kluson's that are nearly identical copies of the originals, the screw holes should even line up - and they look correct.
A few suggestions - Keep the originals, even the screws. Put them in a zip-loc, and keep them with the guitar. DO NOT drill out the peg holes to fit different tuners! If you can't find exact drop in replacements, then don't change them! If you want, you can chemically age new nickel plated tuners with an acid solution to make them look old. Just be very careful if you go this route.

Yep! Totally agree. If the new ones don't drop right in, needing just 6 screws and 6 bushings installed, then I'm not messin with it.

Gotohs are drop in replacements. No need to change bushings (grommets, actually)., and the 8 screw holes match up perfectly. Sitrp tuners = 4 screws per side.
