12 string suggestion to pair with a Collings D1T
I’ve played a long time and never owned a 12 string. I have a Collings D1T that has a tone I really like. It is bright with a full bottom end, crisp I guess. Which 12-string will get me in the same ballpark, tonally? To clarify, given I like the sound of the D1T, do you think I’d like the Martin HD12-28 or Guild F512; or ... ? Open to any brand. Thanks for considering.

Your Collings is Spruce/mahogany.
The F-512 and HD12-28 are 2 great rosewood guitars worth trying, you could add a Taylor 858e to those 2 as well. The other great Guild is the F-512 Maple - previously called F-412 - Maple back and sides with an unbraced arch back. ... and welcome to the AGF.

Since chances are you’re going to sell the 12 string anyway, start small.

I’ve got a really top notch Lakewood D14 12 string mahogany/spruce listed in the classifieds...perfect fit and finish, woody and dry...great note separation.

It would be a 12-string that you find that you like as much as your Collings. Twelve string guitars sound, and play, more differently and individual than even 6 strings. Play as many as you can and find one you really like.

Have you thought about about what you want to use a 12 string for? We see many uses for large bodied jumbo or dreadnaught 12-strings, but check out some recordings of people who use smaller bodied 12-frets and you will be surprised by the richness of sound. If your budget allows for another Collings, then you should consider one of their 12 strings, though they don't make many of them. If I didn't already have a Guild Orpheum 12-fret slothead 12-string, I would be seriously looking for a Collings 02H like this one: https://www.store.mccabes.com/cart.p...roduct_id=1315

IF you can find one, a vintage Guild F-312NT just can't be beat.
I've owned a lot of 12 strings over the past 55 years and none can hold a candle to my '71 F-312NT. Definitely worth the search! If you can't find one of these, I'd go for a nice Martin D-12-20 or a Guild F-412. |

Welcome aboard - as a fellow Collings owner, I also feel your pain. You have obviously set the bar high and it will need to be something special to partner your D1. I have 3 12s, but my first one never really got played - I should have tried a lot before buying. However, I'd agree: you have to try a Guild.
