Furch D33 SR trade for Martin
Hey, I have a 2013 Furch D33 SR which is in pristine condition and that I really enjoy. I have someone offer to trade his 1986 Martin D16M. There is not a lot of information available on it and I have to go and give it a try still.
My question is whether this would be a value for value trade. On the sound I’ll give it a listen but should I continue to save for my D18 or will this give you that amazing base that Martins are known for. I have no reason to trade but there is a space in my heart for Martin... |

A Martin D16 For a Furch D33...... at first glance one might consider it a financially equal exchange considering Martin seems to have a higher resale value. But assuming both guitars are in great shape the Furch D33 is a higher end Guitar.
First I would ask why the person wants to trade a mid 80s Martin for a new import. If you like the the Furch I would keep it and save for the D18

I'm guitar sitting right now for a friend who is between houses at the moment and doesn't have a good place to store them. I played his Furch yesterday for about 45 minutes and it is NICE (GA25RC model number). It is a GA sized guitar with nice abalone purfling and a killer tone when tuned to lower C tunings. It also has Taylor-like playability. I just played it again today for another 40 minutes and remain duly impressed.
I don't think you would be getting the better end of that deal, except maybe for eventual resale value. A Martin will resell faster than Furch, being less well known in the USA. Save up for a D-18 that you choose. I see that you are in South Africa, and I have no idea of the used market and brand availability there. Last edited by Earl49; 06-23-2019 at 03:43 PM. I doubt the Martin would sound half as good as the Furch. Keep it.
Or if you will trade, take a good long consideration after listening to both guitars

So the fact that it’s a poor mans D18v would not hold up against the furch

D33SR is more equivelant to a D28. But martins just cost more (american made/brand prestige etc) In my opinion I think you'd be getting a much lesser instrument.

Possible trade
First. let me say that Furch makes some very fine instruments that play well above their price point. I have played more than a few and always been impressed by them.
Having said that, the D16M from that period is NOT the same as the 16 series that came later and what most people think of when you say -16 nowadays. I have a 000-16M from that period and it is an amazing guitar. I was very much surprised by the tone and playability when I tried it. It also explains why you can't find much info on it. I had the same problem when I was looking at the one I have and even Martin didn't have much info when I threw the SN at them. It will most likely be forward scalloped bracing, dove tail neck (not one of the "semi dove tail" or other mortise/tenon or bolt on necks), light and responsive, higher grade woods and will blow any current D18 away for tone and volume. You might also search the UMGF for; " The "Original Club-16" - pre-1995 style-16 " If that's what you're looking at my advice would be to grab it and run if it's in good condition. But, let your ears and heart be the judge. You'll know as soon as you pick it up and start playing. Let us know what you decide.
