Default "The Tree" - Opps I Did It Again...

While researching the documentary I'm trying to put put together about "The Tree" I found another board for sale and opps I did it again. The whole board is 100% Tortoise Shell figure with dark veiny lines.

Congratulations on that find Jay. What's the size, and how many sets might you get from it?

I hope you're bracing for the flood of requests.

Thanks! Not sure about numbers yet. You never know until you open it up. Wood that's been around since 1964 have potential for all kinds of problems. I've had some mahogany beetle issues in the past. This board had a check that ran for 4 feet around the 15 inch mark...so I drilled a hole to stabilize it then cut two boards for side billets and two for boards for back billets.

I'll take those up tomorrow with the rest of the board to re-saw with David Borson in Fort Bragg. I "budgeted" for 25 sets.

I can't WAIT to see what's going to pop out of that slab-o-wood.

Whoa! And here I thought that figure was only in a small portion of the tree, and all used up by now. 25 practically priceless sets? I shudder to think what that board would cost... could it be the most expensive single board that's ever existed?

If you ask me, you should cut as many one-piece backs as possible from that. You can always cut them into 2-piece after resawing, and that figure would look a lot better with the veins "sticking up" from the surface rather than half up and half down due to runout inversion on a bookmatch.

Jay...now I know what you can bring to the H'burg party.
A set from that board will make a fine party favor.

I see "The Tree" posts everywhere. Anyone mind sending me a link to the underlying story I seem to have missed?

A set would be one heck of a door prize! Maybe a free set to the first buyer of one of Harv's guitars. LOL If Harv gets to build it. LOL

Here is the original story printed in Fine Woodworking years ago.

Basically as a tonewood think of a wood that looks like this

sounds much like Brazilian... and costs accordingly.

+1 ^^^ What Harv said...

We just finished our one and only build with "The Tree" and I can unequivocally say that it is the best mahogany guitar that has ever left our shop, to date. A couple guys who played it recently and have played a lot of our guitars, say it ranks near the top. Folks may foo foo the storied history or price associated with this wood but unquestionably there is some serious mojo in it for sure!
