Default NGD - Huss & Dalton T-0014 Custom (guess the wood!)

Well I just picked up the new to me - but MINT - Huss & Dalton Custom T-0014. I have owned 40+ acoustic guitars over my years (mostly Taylor, a few Martins, a Brook Torridge, Larrivee and others). I have also played many, many high-end guitars from when I traveled domestically and internationally. I have to say that this guitar is on another level from anything I have ever owned. I think it is also one of the finest guitars I have ever played. I knew a wanted a “Martin 00 shape” because I owned a 00-18 in the past. So after research between Collings, Bourgeois, and H&D 00’s, based upon specs and other feedback, I took a chance on the H&D without playing it - which was a big risk. I was trying to split the difference between dryness and overtones because I lean toward a “dry” tone but did want a little sizzle. Oh my gosh! Very sweet, broken in tone that is both sensitive and big sounding at the same time. Which is a bit of a mystery how they do it. Already it has inspired me to play things I’ve not played before which I think is a great litmus test.

I can honestly say I am super happy and this one will go to my kids.

So now for the fun part! What wood is the back and sides? Your turn to guess! I will say the solid top is Torrefied Sitka. Enjoy.

I'd guess sycamore. Very nice! A 00 is the perfect body size, IMO.

Fantastic! My thought is maple; however, since you asked the question I'm guessing it's something else as a couple of others have posted.

No, not Sycamore. I ruled out Myrtle, but could be persuaded to change my mind on that. Maple is a better guess. But it could be something unusual like Primavera.

Give Kimberly Dalton a call at H&D and she can likely look up their records for the serial number. Very helpful folks.

I actually know the wood. I was just making it fun for folks. I will let a few others weigh in and then spill the beans.

I totally agree. Having owned many different size guitars (Grand Symphony, Grand Auditorium, Grand Concert (000, OM), etc. - the 00 really is the perfect size guitar. This one sounds as big or bigger than any 000 I have ever played. Very nice bass response and very balanced too - which is what I was looking for. I was not looking for a very midrange forward guitar.

Absolutely gorgeous! And I'll echo everything you said about H&D's 00s. They're awesome. I think it's their finest model. I have a custom 00 that will probably get buried with me.

Congratulations!

So the winner is….The Bard Rocks. It actually IS Myrtle! Looks more like Light KOA to me. Really sweet tone wood. I owned a Taylor K14 all KOA a while back and it reminded me a bit of that. Only with all the added H and D goodness.
