I think my Brook Torridge and incoming Brook Lyn are pretty close to '00' territory although the Torridge is not a slot head. Torridge is 2013, Sitka/mahogany; Lyn is European spruce over English walnut.

Earlier this year, I purchased an LA Guitar Sales-commissioned Martin Custom Shop 00-18 that was listed on Boston Craig's List by a fellow who is a member of this forum.

I have been absolutely delighted, it is the perfect choice for me in all respects. I think I have found my "end game" acoustic guitar.

Real Honduran mahogany, I'm pretty sure:

I too have long searched for the perfect, for me, 00 12 fret slot head. As I age my hands more and more reject vee shape necks, but I find I prefer a wider nut width. A bit over 1 and 3/4". Anyway I finally bought a used Pono 00 with a short scale and it is turning out to be everything I want in a steel string guitar. I have had the Blueridge parlor, Eastman parlors and Martin 00 28vs and others. This little Pono which cost used about as much as a really good Martin case is far and away my favorite. A perfectly comfortable C shape neck and great sound. I think the new Pono 00s are all 1 and13/16" but some of the 0 size older ones are 1 and 3/4". I think the shape of the neck is more important perhaps than the width, or at least just as important.

Hi, in the 60th "post" (I should have said) I wrote :

Hi, then you probably don't really want a Martin style 0 and 00. These are early 20th century designs for fingerstyle.

Martin always gave them 1 & 7/8 nut widths, but many, including Collings and Eastman reduced them to 1 & 13/16".

Fretboard widths are a significant aspect of this design.

As Eric (Skye) so aptly put it - "It's basically a classical guitar with piano strings" - (so cool!)

The Waterloos - effectively copies of Gibson/Kalamazoo etc., come with 1 & 3/4" nut widths but spread over a shorter scale to a 2 & 3/8" string spacing.

Hope that helps.

I'm a big fan of 12-fret 00 guitars. Not sure why you have available locally for you to try out, but if you like the sound of mahogany, try a Taylor 522 or 322 12-fret. It's just a bit wider than a standard 00, but really doesn't feel like it.

My current favorite is a Bourgeois 00 12-fret. Definitely give one a go if you can find one - though its not a slot head.

How do 00 12 fretters work for tall guys with very big hands? I have a 12 fret, long scale, regular sized body guitar that has taken some time to get used to but it gets tricky below the 12th. Thanks.

Don't know what a regular size body means. The hands question might go more towards scale length rather than frets clear of the body. I have pretty average sized hands, and really like 25.9" and 25.75" scales (Martin and Gibson standard short scales) I have mostly 1 3/4" nuts, expect for the 00-21 which is 1 13/16." Yes, playing above the 12th fret is harder on a 12-fret guitar. Some people opt for a cutaway.

OMMV

Perhaps a local Martin dealer can commission one for you?
