Default Amazing how much one minor change in hand positioning can mean.

So I’ve been trying to learn Hozier’s cherry wine and there is one part where I have to do a hammer on. Logically it should be done with my middle finger, but try as I might I just can’t get it to hammer on unless it’s exactly in one spot. Tried to practice it for an hour and just couldn’t get it. Then I thought, well let me try my forefinger. Immediately I was able to get the hammer on perfectly.

I’ll have to remember that the next time I have trouble with a certain cord or finger positioning. There might be an alternate way that will be easier for me.

When I followed private lessons with a pro,
he made me realize how my classical posture
hampered my fingerstyle playing on a fourteen
fret folk acoustic guitar.

My guitar teacher had me make one small shift in angle with my thumb when I wasn’t getting the tone I wanted out of the bass notes. Sometimes a tiny change can make an enormous difference.
Best,
Jayne

Bryan Sutton’s course on ArtistWorks was a revelation for me. He approaches posture, hand positions, guitar angle, pick angle, etc, as if it was baseball and he was a hitting coach. I thought I was pretty good on that stuff, but I had to take a few steps back and re-learn a couple things.

As an old man with a slightly damaged fretting hand work arounds are what I do. It's either that or the music stops. And I'm playing more than ever now days. I noticed the other day that I use different fingers to play the same licks at times. And why not?

Keep practicing with the middle finger for hammers though. The day will come when you have to hold a note with the index or ring and have to hammer with the middle finger. Somethings come easier when you practice them everyday for a week or so, then take 2-3 days off from it.

I remember working on this track a couple of years ago and recall a reasonable stretch to a little finger hammer on:

Great track though, will have to try and remember it!

Amen! I'm trying to learn a song and just a simple change of the thumb position suggested by my guitar instructor made a portion I was practicing easier. Not a piece of cake, but easier.
