I'd be interested to know what the break angle was like over the saddles of the guitars with "ringing" 1st strings. And also what the bottom of the saddle contact in the bridge slot was like under the 1st string.
I think I would look at increasing the break angle (slotting the peg hole) first. Then look at how the saddle sits on the p/u element (is there a gap between the end of the element and the end of the slot) . And finally I'd try different bridge materials. A softer bridge material like nubone can help. In this case the Op has said that they replaced the original saddle with a componsated bone one. Those often throw the release point of the 1st string forward and so significantly reduce the break angle while keeping the same action. Thus reducing the down pressure of the 1st string on the saddle. Result = ringing banjo sound. This is why a thicker gauge string will sometimes sound better.
